A fine Peninsula Gold Medal awarded to Major-General C. E. Conyers, C.B., 82nd Regiment, for Orthes, 27 February 1814, at which battle he commanded his regiment until severely wounded Field Officer’s Small Gold Medal, for Orthes (Lieut. Coll. Chas. E. Conyers, 82nd Foot.) fitted with original glass lunettes and original gold ribbon buckle and suspension, this once neatly repaired and no longer swivels, a tiny chip to the upper edge of reverse lunette, otherwise good very fine £12,000-£16,000 --- Provenance: Glendining’s, November 1928; J. B. Hayward & Son, c.1975; Buckland Dix & Wood, April 1995; Dixon’s Gazette, Spring 2003; Baldwin’s, September 2016. Charles Edward Conyers appears to have been born in Castlelyons, County Cork, Ireland. Whilst records are scant concerning his lineage, he is believed to be a scion of the influential Conyers family of Castletown-Conyers, County Limerick. Charles Conyers received his first commission into the British Army in 1794, as a young ensign and soon found himself sent, via nine-months spent in Gibraltar, to the island of St Domingo in the West Indies. As part of the 1st Battalion 82nd Foot, this regiment was intended to assist in the establishment of a protectorate at Port-au-Prince at the request of a number of influential islanders, and to dislodge the increasingly beleaguered French military presence located there, which was suffering under something of a national rebellion against French rule and slavery. Some 832 rank and file of the 82nd Foot were embarked on 10 June 1795, under the command of the young Lieutenant-Colonel George Garnier, arriving at Mole St Nicholas, and proceeding immediately to Port-au-Prince to assist the governor, Major-General Sir Adam Williamson K.B., in a military offensive. Fighting from the district of Mirebalais, where, for a period of twelve months, the 82nd were the only European troops, Conyers was made lieutenant on 2 September 1795, and was present during a number of engagements with the enemy. The most serious of these attacks was made by the local chief and leader Toussaint L’Ouverture, on the whole line of the frontier, when 40 men of the 82nd, under Lieutenants Manners and Conyers, accompanied by some two thousand five hundred colonial levies, marched at night to assist Fort Serolle, then invested by four-thousand enemy soldiers, who were taken by surprise, subsequently dislodged and then dispersed with considerable casualties. For this particular success Lieutenant Conyers received a personal letter of thanks from Brigadier-General Churchill. Unfortunately, the 82nd lost their Commanding Officer Colonel Garnier (and his brother Henry, Ensign, amongst many) to yellow fever in December 1796, adding to their difficulties. In 1797 Conyers was placed in command of Fort Desureaux, leading a garrison of forty Europeans and three-hundred colonial troops. He had to repel several assaults during this period, and when Pestel was attacked, he personally led a party against the rear of the enemy, which caused the failure of their enterprise, and for his conduct on this occasion he again received a personal letter of thanks from Brigadier-General Churchill. In March 1798, he was appointed Fort Major of Irois, and during its siege, which lasted for three months, Lieutenant Conyers and two non-commissioned officers of the 82nd were wounded, and the garrison lost more men killed and wounded than its original number of three-hundred. Towards the end of 1798, treaties were made with the hostile chiefs for the evacuation of the island, owing to the constant fighting and the ravages of malaria and yellow fever, the remains of the 82nd were collected at Jaremie, under the command of Lieutenant Conyers, the only remaining officer of the original number which had landed less than three years before at St Domingo. In total, from the original contingent, 22 officers were lost as well as some 1000 men. After returning to England in late January 1799, he served briefly in the expedition to Quiberon Bay in France, before serving in Minorca for two years with the 82nd Foot, until it was ceded to Spain under the terms of the Peace of Amiens, before being removed to Ireland in 1802. In this year Conyers was promoted to captain on 25 June, and made A.D.C. to Major-General Patrick Wauchope. It appears that he subsequently followed Wauchope to Malta for 1 year and 8 months, and then on to Egypt in 1807 as A.D.C., serving as a member of the staff under General Alexander Mackenzie-Fraser, to confront Ottoman forces in that strategic location. He was present with the British force led by Wauchope at the storming and retreat from Rosetta, as the British forces were shot and sniped from windows in the labyrinthine streets. Here Wauchope was killed and Captain Conyers was wounded with him in the fighting, receiving a severe contusion (presumably from a glancing bullet). His service papers then detail that he was subsequently made A.D.C. to Brigadier-General Sir William Stewart during the siege of Rosetta, before the British and Colonial army’s retreat to Sicily, where Captain Conyers served for 2 years and on the staff as brigade major. Returning to England after some 9 years abroad in 1809, he was officially promoted to major on 16 February 1809, when he was granted three months’ leave. His service papers inconveniently end at this point, but it does not appear that he took part in the ill-fated Walcheren Expedition in which both battalions of the 82nd Foot served. We do know, however, from the Royal Military calendar that he served on the staff as brigade major in Spain under Wellington. The 82nd saw a great deal of action throughout the war in Spain and France, and perhaps owing to the severity in senior officer casualties suffered amongst the 82nd Foot during this campaign he appears to have been the highest-ranking able-bodied officer of the regiment by late 1813. Continuing into 1814, he saw his finest hour during the operations on the Gave d’Oleron, at Hastingues and Oyer le Gave across the Pyrenees, culminating in the Battle of Orthes on 27 February. Here he led his regiment into action against concentrated French forces in a superior position, and commanded it successfully until he was severely wounded, being awarded the Army Gold Medal, as well as another being awarded to Major Vincent who succeeded him in command. Despite inflicting heavy French casualties, the 82nd suffered only 2 officer casualties, Conyers severely wounded and Lieutenant Drummond wounded, two other ranks killed and 34 wounded, suggesting that Conyers had been conspicuous at the front of his men. After a brief pause of 4 months, he received the brevet of lieutenant-colonel, and thereafter Conyers was sent to command the 82nd Foot in Canada and North America in the War of 1812. 590 remaining rank and file embarked at Paulliac in Bordeaux on 5 May 1814, travelling to Quebec. Arriving in Canada, they travelled to meet the British army and fight with Canadian and Native Indian Volunteers at Fort Erie on the Niagara Frontier. In particular, it appears that Conyers here commanded the 2nd Battalion 82nd Foot until peace was made with America in March 1815, following the British capture of Washington, and the American victory at New Orleans. The Second Battalion was subsequently reduced and returned to England and Conyers was made lieutenant-colonel on 20 April 1815. He was stationed in Ireland at Birr as commanding officer for two years before returning to England, and whilst at his home in Fulham he married Miss Sarah Teixeria de Sampayo, daughter of the Portuguese consul-general in London (and former inspector general of cavalry in Lisbon) Count Antonio Teixeria de Sampayo, on 14 June 1815. He had three children, Charles Edward Conyers jnr. (himself later an officer in the 2nd ...

BOUGUEREAU WILLIAM-ADOLPHE: (1825-1905) French painter. A.L.S., Wm. Bouguereau, one page, 8vo, Paris, 22nd October 1868, to [Jean-Marie] Bonnassieux, in French. At the time when I solicit the votes of the Academy, I come to ask you to do the honour of accepting the invitation which I address to each of the members to have the kindness to come and see at my studio the great work that I am finishing for the city of Bordeaux; it is I believe, the most serious title that I have for your benevolence'). With blank integral leaf. VGJean-Marie Bonnassieux (1810-1892) French sculptor.

GOYA FRANCISCO JOSE DE: (1746-1828) Spanish Painter. Goya is considered the most important Spanish Painter of the late 18th and early 19th centuries and is regarded as the last of the Old Masters and the first of the moderns. A precursor of the Expressionism. His masterpiece portrayal of a naked woman, La Maja Desnuda ("The Naked Maja"), now in the Museo del Prado in Madrid, was a remarkably daring nude for the time, renowned for the unashamed gaze of the model towards the viewer without negative connotations. An exceptionally rare L.S., `Fran[cis]co de Goya´, three pages, 4to, Bordeaux, 30th November 1824, to the Duchess of San Fernando, in Spanish. Goya apologies for his hasty departure from Paris preventing him from saying goodbye to her himself, stating in part `Cuando salí de Paris para venir a esta [ciudad], dispuse atropelladamente mi viaje; el tiempo urgía, me hallaba sin dinero, y admití la oferta de unos amigos que me anticiparon los gastos del camino…´ (Translation: `When I left Paris to come to this [city], I hastily organized my trip; time was urgent, I was without money, and I accepted the offer of some friends who anticipated the expenses of the trip…") Goya is still not sure about his near future and explains that his has requested to the King of Spain an extension of his permission to leave his court painter obligations, saying `Aqui estoy, sin saber lo que debo hacer de mi. He pedido una prórroga, siquiera para poder pasar el invierno al calor de la chimenea, y no se si S[u] M[ajestad] tendrá a bien de concedérmela…´ (Translation: "Here I am, not knowing what I should make of myself. I have asked for an extension, at least that I can spend the winter in the warmth before a fireplace, and I don't know if H[is] M[ajesty] will be good enough to grant it to me…") Further again, Goya explains in full detail what the present he has sent to his correspondent is, being some drafts, drawings and figurines of three dwarfs, stating in part `Me tomo la libertad de remitir a V.E. esos tres comisionados, a quienes doy el encargo especial de asegurarla cuan agradecido estoy a la memoria que conserva de mi, y cuanto deseo complacerla y servirla. Son tres enanos que se presentaron en la feria de Burdeos dos meses hace, y me pareció conveniente sacar un tanteo de sus caras y sus figurillas. El de los pantaloncitos tiene 18 pulgadas, de los otros dos (que son marido y mujer) ella tiene 21 pulgadas y el esposo 20. Celebraré que cumplan su comisión, según los deseos del invalido que los envia´ (Translation: `I take the liberty of sending to Y.E. those three commissioners [referring to his three dwarfs figurines], to whom I give the special charge of assuring you how grateful I am to the memory you keep of me, and how much I wish to please and serve you. They are three dwarfs who appeared at the Bordeaux fair two months ago, and I thought it convenient to make a test of their faces and their figurines. The one with the short trousers is 18 inches, and the other two (who are husband and wife) she is 21 inches and the husband is 20. I will celebrate that they fulfil their commission, according to the wishes of the invalid who sends them" [Goya refers here to himself]) Goya has a lengthy list of important portraits paintings of dwarfs. An exceptional document, with very interesting content related to Goya´s last years, short after his arrival to France, and referring to his work on three dwarves he met at a fair in Bordeaux. A letter in very fine condition. VG  Goya became a court painter to the Spanish Crown in 1786 and this early part of his career is marked by portraits of the Spanish aristocracy. In 1793 an illness left him deaf, after which his work became progressively darker. In 1799 Goya became the First Court Painter, the highest rank for a Spanish court Painter, under King Charles IV of Spain. During the Peninsular War and Napoleon´s invasion of Spain, Goya remained in Madrid, and his series of paintings Disasters of War, or his painting The Second of May 1808, show how much this war affected him deeply, fearing for his country´s fate. He also painted important portraits of the Royal Spanish family and of Lord Wellington. His late period is marked by the Black Paintings, on the plaster walls of his own house "La Quinta del Sordo" ("The House of the Deaf Man") where disillusioned by political and religious corruption, and by social developments in Spain, he lived near isolation. He also painted dwarves, and persons with insanity or in mental asylums, as well as themes related with witches and fantastical creatures. Goya abandoned Spain in 1824, the year of the present letter, to retire to the French city of Bordeaux from where the present letter is written. He was accompanied by his maid and companion Leocadia Weiss, 42 years younger than him, although it remains unclear if she was or not his lover. It was at that time and in Bordeaux where Goya completed his well-known series of paintings La Tauromaquia, depicting bullfighting scenes.  Goya died and was buried in Bordeaux, but was later re-interred in the Royal Hermitage of San Antonio de la Florida in Madrid. Famously, the skull was missing, and the Spanish consul to Bordeaux reported so to his superiors in Madrid, who wired back "Send Goya, with or without head". The present letter is most probably in the hand of Leandro Fernández de Moratín (1760-1828) Spanish Dramatist, Poet, and translator of works of Moliere and Shakespeare into Spanish. Goya made his friend´s portrait in his late years in Bordeaux. Fernandez de Moratin lived his late years in exile in France and died in Paris only two months after Goya passed away in Bordeaux.  The present letter is written to Maria Luisa of Bourbon and Villabriga (1783-1846) Duchess of San Fernando de Quiroga. She was directly related to several Kings of Spain, being the grand-daughter of Philip V, the niece of Charles III, and cousin of Charles IV. Maria Luisa and her husband, first duke of San Fernando, went into exile in 1823 to Paris.

MARGUERITE DE NAVARRE: (1492-1549) Also known as Marguerite of Angoulême. Princess of France and Queen of Navarre by her second marriage to King Henry II of Navarre. Marguerite was the sister of French King Francis I. Marguerite is the ancestress of the Bourbon Kings of France. A patron of humanists and culture, she is regarded as "The First Modern Woman". Rare L.S., `Votre bonne cousine et amie, Marguerite´, one page, 4to, Jarnac, (Charente, Southwestern of France), 12th March 1543, to Monsieur de Jarnac, in old French. Marguerite will intervene and write to the King so that the Sire de Jarnac is compensated for the expenses incurred for the trips made for the service of the King, stating `Mon cousin, j'ai vu la lettre que vous m'avez écrite et suis bien aise que vous n'êtes encore parti pour aller à La Rochelle. J'écris présentement aux deux qu'ils me viennent trouver à Béziers et que je tiens prêt qu'ils me fassent compagnie jusqu'à Bordeaux. J'avais délibéré de vous mander là avec madame de Jarnac et votre fille mais j'ai avisé qu'il sera meilleur savoir avant quelle volonté à monsieur de Caumont…´ (Translation: "My Cousin, I have seen the letter you wrote to me and am very glad that you have not yet left to go to La Rochelle. I assure you that I will not fail to write to the King about the expense you have made for travel and other things under his service because it is reasonable that you should be rewarded for it, and also the King would not want people to become poor at his service and especially you whom he holds in such good esteem. As for Monsieur de Caumont's affair, I have written about it... I am currently writing to the two who are coming to find me in Béziers and I am ready for them to accompany me to Bordeaux. I had deliberated to summon you there with Madame de Jarnac and your daughter, but I advised that it would be better to know beforehand what will Monsieur de Caumont…") Also annotated to the heading `De la mesme reyne pour les mesmes affaires des mesmes moys et an. Mars 1543´ (Translation: "From the Queen for the affairs of the same month and year, March 1543") Neatly inlaid, otherwise VG

Lot 14

Follower of FRANCISCO DE GOYA Y LUCIENTES (Fuendetodos, Zaragoza, 1746 - Bordeaux, France, 1828)."Male study".Oil on canvas. Relined on old canvas. It shows faults and damage to the pictorial surface.Provenance: private collection conceived since the 70's between London and Madrid.Size: 102 x 66 cm; 106 x 76 cm (frame). The deliberate coarseness with which this male bust has been portrayed and the use of a chromatic range based on black and ochre tones are very reminiscent of Goya's black paintings. One of the most outstanding painters in the history of universal art, Francisco de Goya received his first drawing and painting lessons from José Luzán Martínez, who taught at his home and also at the Academy of Drawing founded in Saragossa in 1754. After three years of study with this master, Goya applied for a pension from the Royal Academy of San Fernando in 1763, at the age of seventeen. It seems that by then he was already a pupil of Francisco Bayeu, who had returned from court. However, Goya did not manage to get into the Academy, nor did he when he tried again in 1766. Around 1770 he undertook a trip to Italy to further his training and improve his skills. There he showed his early taste for the grotesque and satirical. After a long career, Goya was replaced as Pintor de Cámara by Vicente López, and he fell into a period of isolation, bitterness and illness which led him to seclude himself in the Quinta del Sordo, on the outskirts of Madrid, where he produced his supreme work: the Pinturas Negras (Black Paintings). Fed up with the absolutism imposed by Ferdinand VII in Spain, Goya finally left for France in 1824, where he met exiled liberal friends. He spent his last years there and produced his final work, "The Milkmaid of Bordeaux", in which he anticipated Impressionism. Today his work is part of the most important art galleries in the world, from the Prado Museum to the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg, the Louvre in Paris and the National Gallery in London.

MIGUEL ORTIZ BERROCAL (Villanueva de Algaidas, Malaga, 1933 - Antequera, Malaga, 2006)."Loreley", 1981-1986.Polished and patinated bronze. Sample 134/500.A pearl is missing from the interchangeable piece of the mouth. The base and the coupling that form part of the mouth piece are missing. No maker's book.Signed and numbered on the back.Provenance: private collection conceived since the 1970s between London and Madrid.Measurements: 30 x 14 x 20 cm.Round sculpture showing the face of an enigmatic character. The work is made up of pieces that complete a whole, some of them like the rose of the mouth. Miguel Ortiz Berrocal showed a special predilection for articulated and detachable bronze sculptures. Inspired by the main creative forces of the first half of the 1900s, the artist sought his own artistic path. He was inspired by science and created works based on mathematical, physical and scientific principles. He also developed the concept of "dismountability", understood as the process of searching for the inner forms of volumes, which implies that sculptures are composed of elements that have to be assembled and disassembled in order to penetrate their invisible space. Berrocal began his training at the Escuela de Artes y Oficios in Madrid, where he was a pupil of Ángel Ferrant. He then went on to the San Fernando School of Fine Arts, where he was a pupil of Ramón Stolz. He complemented his training with work as a draughtsman in the studio of the architect Casto Fernández Shaw and as an assistant to several architects in Rome between 1952 and 1954. During his stay in Paris in 1955, he finally decided to devote himself to sculpture. His early works show the influence of Chillida, while at the same time denoting his preference for articulated and detachable forms in bronze. The difficulty involved in making each of his sculptures led him to decide to produce them in series. With this idea in mind, he produced two hundred copies of the sculpture "Maria de la O", for which he received the prize for sculpture at the Paris Biennale and which was later acquired by the MOMA in New York. In 1966 he settled permanently in Verona, and from 1968 he alternated his work between monumental and small-scale works. Together with several gallery owners, he founded the Società Multicettera, the first industry of small sculptures. He has exhibited in Italy, France, Germany, Spain and the United States, received the gold medal of the Bronze of Padua, the Grand Prize of Honour at the Brazil Biennial, and was named Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters by the French government. He has sculptures in public places in Korea, Bordeaux, Denmark and Switzerland, as well as in various places in Spain. He is represented in the Museums of Modern Art in New York and Paris, the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, the Kunsthalle in Hamburg, the Juan March Foundation in Madrid, the National Gallery in Rome and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.
