A Flemish Old Testament Biblical Tapestry Fragment, Oudenaarde mid 16th century, woven with a young man climbing the stairs to attend an older man, sat on a dias, with a further tower in the background with balcony revealing a bed chamber, with a horse led chariot bearing a figure surrounded by figures in the background, now lacking border, with later grey selvedge 222cm.high, 305cm. wide; 7ft. 3in., 10ft. This tapestry could depict the Parable of the Prodigal Son,. which as one of the most important parables taught the virtues of repentance and forgiveness. The scene could be the Return of the Prodigal Son (Luke: 15:11-32), showing the young son before his father and the elder son squandering his inheritance in the background in riotous living. The inclusion however of the lion pelt, attributed to Hercules, could have been included as the personification of physical strength and courage. This is speculative in its application to this tapestry. See. I. De Meuter, Tapisseries dAudenarde du XVI au XVIII Siecle, 1999, pp. 148-158 for a selection of Biblical Tapestries of the same date and similar style to the offered lot, which are all Oudenaarde.
