Lot 70

Lotus 23 B Type ProjectUnregisteredBeing sold without reservePurchased by the owner in 1981With two doors (not photographed on the car), a Series II Lotus Twincam engine, a Renault gearbox, a differential and other partsFile with a small amount of correspondence, a group of photographs and copy informationBeing sold due to poor health and the owner having given up drivingAlso see the owners Lotus Elan DHC and Caterham Super 7 projects in this auctionwith a box steel and not round steel frame this is not an original Lotus 23 B, hence we have called this a 'Type'From a leading authority on Lotus 23 B cars:the engine is a series 2 Lotus Twincam, probably taken out of an Escort judging by the shape of the sump. It had a 6 bolt flywheel attachment which theoretically means that it cannot have started life in a 23b. It looks pretty standard to me. The gearbox is an early Renault unit similar to but not the same as that used in the 1100cc 23's. The bell housing at the front of the box is unusual and may fit onto a ford cylinder block, if that's the case then it must be some sort of specially made part probably for some sort of ford powered mid engined car like a formula junior but not a Lotus as they had a different design to this. The differential is not a part I recognise at all, it looks like a conversion of a ford Atlas axle maybe but with drum brakes I cannot think of a car it might have come from. All lots in this sale are sold as is and bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. Please read our terms and conditionsThis lot must be collected by 12.30pm on Friday 28th March. If the buyer has not collected by this time it will automatically be removed and placed into storage, incurring a removal charge of £100 + VAT, to include the first week of storage,  unless otherwise noted. Storage will then be charged at £10 + VAT per day or part thereof. If collecting from storage, please provide 24 hours notice

B. Seeley and W. Burnside, 1846.*** Quin's cartography mapped the world across time, with each map revealing the geography and the history of the age to which it refers, demonstrating the reach of various empires.

Lot 264

British Isles.- Collins (Capt. Greenville) Great Britain's Coasting Pilot. In Two Parts. Being a new and Exact Survey of the Sea-Coast of England and Scotland from the River of Thames to the Westward and Northward, letterpress title printed in red & black, additional illustrated title with an inset map of the British Isles, dedications to the Master and Wardens of Trinity House, preface and general description, 45 uncoloured engraved charts only, mostly double-page, four folding (English Channel, Carlingford Loch, Scilly Isles and the River Thames), and two sheets of costal profiles, printed on thick paper, some heavy damp-stains and browning, some heavy off-setting and spotting throughout, the damp-stains and off-setting notably worse to charts in the first quarter, title pages and text with damp-stains and browning, rough edges, some of the folding maps with minor splits and nicks, modern endpapers, modern half calf, marbled boards, spine gilt, folio, Mount & Page, 1781*** Greenville Collins was one of the most important English cartographers though little is known of the man himself. He was made a commander in 1679 and "Hydrographer to the King" by Charles II. In 1681 Charles II appointed Collins to "survey the seacoast of the kingdom by measuring all the sea coasts with a chain and taking all the bearings of the headlands". It took him from 1681-1688 to do this survey and he produced 120 manuscript draughts. In 1693 the charts were published in atlas form.
