First and Second World War Military Cross group, awarded to Captain John Macmurray, comprising: Military Cross (unengraved with date or name), boxed, 1914-15 star, War medal, Victory medal, Second World War medal, and Croix de Geurre; two card medal boxes; Loyal Service pin, boxed. Notes: John Macmurray MC (16 February 1891 – 21 June 1976) was a Scottish philosopher. His thought moved beyond the modern tradition begun by Descartes and continued in Britain by Locke, Berkeley and Hume. He made contributions in the fields of political science, religion, education, and philosophy in a long career of writing, teaching, and public speaking. After retirement he became a Quaker. Macmurray was born on 16 February 1891 in Maxwelltown in Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland, into a strict Presbyterian family. His father was employed by the Inland Revenue Department as an excise officer. In 1899 the family moved to Aberdeen, where the young Macmurray attended Aberdeen Grammar School (1903 to 1905) and Robert Gordon's College (1905 to 1909). He was educated at the University of Glasgow, earning First-class honours in Classics and was awarded a Snell Exhibition to attend Balliol College, Oxford in 1913. His tutor at Balliol was A. D. Lindsay. When war with Germany was declared in 1914, Macmurray enlisted in the Royal Army Medical Corps. In August 1915 he was sent to France with the 58th Field Ambulance as part of the 19th (Western) Division of the British Expeditionary Force. In June 1916 he was awarded a commission as Second Lieutenant in the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders and was sent to the Battle of the Somme. Macmurray married Elizabeth Hyde Campbell in London during a three-day leave in October 1916. He was seriously wounded in battle near Arras on 28 March 1918 and was awarded the Military Cross for gallantry. While on leave recovering from a broken ankle in 1917, Macmurray was invited to give a sermon in an unidentified North London church. He preached on the importance of preparing for post-war reconciliation with the enemy rather than exacting vengeance. The sermon was coldly received by the congregation and Macmurray saw their reaction as indicating a lack of true Christianity in the institutional churches. Because of this experience, Macmurray determined not to be a member of any church, while continuing to maintain his strong Christian convictions.[3]:80–81 After the war, Macmurray completed his studies at Balliol, obtaining a distinction in the Shortened Honours Course of Literae Humaniores in 1919, as well as winning in the John Locke Scholarship in Mental Philosophy in the same year. He worked as a Lecturer in Philosophy at the University of Manchester from 1919 to 1920, followed by two years as Chair of Philosophy at the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa. In 1922 he returned to Balliol as a Fellow and Tutor, succeeding his former tutor A.D. Lindsay as Jowett Lecturer in Philosophy. He left Oxford to become Grote Professor of Mind and Logic at University College London, the position he held from 1928 to 1944. He then moved to the University of Edinburgh, where he held the Chair of Moral Philosophy until his retirement in 1958. Macmurray and his wife had no children. After his retirement, they moved to the village of Jordans, Buckinghamshire, where they both joined the Society of Friends. In 1970 they returned to Edinburgh, where Macmurray died on 21 June 1976.

('C' re-impressed after error) and renamed War and Victory Medals both impressed 'Major F.C. Nawton' without service or regimental details; also included is Major Nawton's WWI dog tag. Major Nawton is listed with the M.C. to his name in the 13758 supplement to the London Gazette 11th November 1919. Accompanying the lot is a photograph of Major Nawton in uniform on horseback and a biographical letter written by his brother-in-law from which the following excerpts are taken: 'He fought at the Battle of Mons in 1914 and in the subsequent retreat from that place sustained the first of the five wounds which he suffered during the course of the war [...] he spent the entire five years of war on the western front in and around Arras and Ypres amid scenes of the most appalling devastation. I never heard him speak of the incident which earned him the Military Cross and a mention in Dispatches. My sister only learned of the circumstances from fellow officers present at the time, notably a Major Jackson. He told her that a strategically important emplacement, in which there were a number of machine guns, was overrun and captured by the enemy in a concerted raid. It was essential that the post be retaken at once and in the face of determined opposition by the German troops, Major Nawton led the counter attack. Only the extreme bravery of those taking part led to the success of this mission and the subsequent saving of many British lives [...] the photograph of Major Nawton on horseback near Arras in May 1918, was taken shortly before the final German offensive of that year. He was once again wounded during those battles, was invalided home [...] he was a modest, reserved, serious and moral man and I'm sure that the scenes of death and devastation, which he had witnessed for so long, remained with him always. To me he was always an will remain a true gentleman and hero. It is my hope that whomsoever takes over the custody of these medals will at times recall the gallantry of the man who earned them.'. This letter and a further empty Military Cross case of issue are included in this lot. Additional InformationBoth cases somewhat worn, medal itself with light wear, the other three medals with general wear, some surface scratches, etc, the War and Victory Medals renamed, dog tag heavily worn but does bear partially rubbed no. 2673 matching the 1914-1915 Star awarded when Nawton was of rank Private, regarding this medal, the C in F.C. Nawton has been reimpressed.

AN IMPORTANT RELIC OF THE WORLD WAR I FIGHTER ACE CAPTAIN ALBERT BALL, VC (1896-1917). THE SHEARED PROPELLER BLADE OF THE BRISTOL SCOUT BIPLANE IN WHICH CAPTAIN ALBERT BALL CRASH LANDED AT NOTTINGHAM IN NOVEMBER 1916 of laminated and polished mahogany, retaining the British and Colonial Aeroplane Company green and gold garter logo transfer Scout, 109cm l, stamped B&C 2 and two square boxed stamps AID/511Provenance:Captain Albert Ball, VC, by whom given at the scene to witness George William Ash (1907-2002); thence by descent to the present vendor.Exhibited: Nottingham Building Society, 'The Aces 1914-1918' window exhibition, 1972. More poignant a relic of one of England's greatest heroes of the skies would be hard to imagine. When Albert Ball crash landed at Wollaton Park, Nottingham, the Bristol Scout aircraft, first flown in 1914, had been superseded and was used for training purposes or, as on this occasion, by officers for 'jaunts'. Ball was returning on leave to Nottingham to visit his parents when Bill Ash, an estate worker, was first on the scene and recognised Albert Ball who had scrambled out of the wreckage was more irritated than dazed at having crashed and retorted to Ash's request for a relic "You can have the whole b... lot". Shortly afterwards a lorry arrived and the aircraft was taken away, By the time of the incident Ball was already a National hero. At the time of his death over Arras in 1917, he had shot down at least 44 German planes and was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross. Bill Ash was interviewed for an article in the Lenton Listener, ecember 1987/January 1988 issue in which he was photographed holding the propeller ++In the same good entirely original and unrestored condition as when first acquired. Not restored or repolished; not hitherto offered for sale
