During the years of his minority, the duchy was ruled by a regent, his uncle Friedrich Karl. In 1693, when Eberhard Ludwig was sixteen, the Holy Roman Emperor Leopold I proclaimed him duke in order to secure the duchy`s support for the Empire: strategically situated on the right bank of the Rhine, Württemberg represented a significant bastion for the Empire against the aggressive encroachments of Louis XIV`s France. Often popularly represented as a spendthrift and proto-absolutist ruler unduly influenced by his mistress and her family, the duke was typical of many of his peers - the rulers of the German princely states - in seeking to establish and increase the status of his duchy through overt magnificence, military expenditure and diplomatic manoeuvring. His uncle had created a standing army from Württemberg`s militia in the early 1690s and the duke capitalised on that initiative by increasing the size of the army: both men also raised regiments of Württembergers for the specific purpose of hiring them as mercenaries to other states. Although loyally allied to the Empire and the anti-French `Grand Alliance` during the War of the League of Augsburg (1688-97), the duke was ambivalent in his allegiance during the War of the Spanish Succession (1702-14) and periodically flirted with the idea of a French alliance in the hope of increasing his status; his appointment as Imperial Field Marshal in 1712 was made in order to secure his loyalty to the Empire. The ending of the war with France in 1714 left Württemberg in considerable debt and the duke without his desired enhanced political status. In the same year, though, hostilities between Venice and the Ottoman Empire began; Venice had hired Württemberger soldiers during an earlier war with the Turks and so, in October 1714, the Serene Republic approached the duke for a large contingent of men. In the event, the duke was out-manoeuvred by the Viennese court, his personal negotiations with Venice failed and the Württemberger soldiers ended up in Imperial service at far lower rates of pay than the Venetians would have paid. It is possible that this gun was cast in 1714 as part of the duke`s attempts to provide appropriately equipped forces for Venice. A colourful figure with considerable, if poorly focussed, ambition, Eberhard Ludwig failed in his principal aim: the establishment of absolute rule in a duchy with a fully funded army and genuine status within the Holy Roman Empire. The cultural achievements of his reign - the building of Schloss Ludwigsburg, for example - must be regarded as outweighing the military and political ones. See Wilson 1995.

The proximity to France of the territories of Charles-Frederick, Margrave of Baden (1756-1811), together with his initial opposition to the French revolution and its effects, resulted in the devastation of Baden by French armies in the mid-1790s. Thereafter, having indemnified France and ceded some territory to that republic, Baden remained under the sway of its powerful neighbour until 1813. In November 1802, the margrave - having lost his eldest son in the previous year and clearly prescient regarding the ambitions of Napoleon - wrote France`s First Consul a fulsome letter in which he thanked Napoleon for his continuing protection and assured him of his admiration and loyalty: significantly, he chose to send his third - and favourite - son, Prince Louis, to France with the letter. In April 1806, by which time the margrave had become an electoral prince, ties between Baden and France were strengthened by the arranged marriage of the elector`s grandson and heir, Prince Charles, to the Emperor Napoleon`s adopted niece and newly created imperial princess, Stéphanie de Beauharnais. The elevation of the elector to the rank of grand-duke - an elevation approved and arranged by Napoleon - followed in July 1806 and further bound Baden to the fortunes of Napoleonic France. Elements of Baden`s small army served alongside that of France in several campaigns between 1805 and 1812: against Austria in 1805, Prussia in 1806, Britain (in Spain) in 1809 and Russia in 1812. Prince Charles, heir to his grandfather after 1801 and husband of Napoleon`s adopted niece from April 1806, was welcomed by personal letter into Napoleon`s military entourage in September 1806 - `J`approve le désir que vous avez de faire la guerre`. The prince was summoned to meet Napoleon at Bamberg early the following month and was with the French army at its decisive victory over that of Prussia at Jena on 14th October 1806, after which Napoleon wrote to Prince Charles`s widowed mother to reassure her that her son had done well at his first battle - `...il s`est bien comporté à la bataille et supporte bien la fatigue`. In 1807, Prince Charles commanded the Baden contingent at the siege of Danzig and continued on active service until 1808. Succeeding his grandfather in 1811, Charles maintained Baden`s support for France until the battle of Leipzig in 1813 demonstrated that the tide of war was no longer flowing in France`s favour. The political, military and personal ties that bound Baden to France from the late 1790s until 1813 must account for the existence of this carbine in the descendant family of the Grand Duke of Baden. It is possible that it originally belonged either to Prince Louis, who visited Napoleon at his father`s behest in 1802 and remained in Paris for some years, or to his nephew, Prince Charles, who served alongside Napoleon in his campaigns between 1806 and 1808: given the martial qualities of the weapon, the latter seems the most likely of the two princes to have been its original owner. Nicolas-Noël Boutet (1761-1833) the distinguished maker of armes de luxe inherited the position of gunmaker to Louis XIV from his father-in-law, Pierre de Sainte (active 1747-88). In 1792 he became technical Director at the new Versailles Manufactory and in 1800 rose to Directeur Artiste with overall control. He held this position until the closure of the manufactory in 1818. Boutet died fifteen years later in poverty, his career having survived six French Political regimes. Daniel Bouyssay was controller at the Versailles Manufactory from Year II (1793-4) until Year XIV (1805).

Bombay Staff Corps - A two-part waist belt clasp, 1855 pattern but with acanthus finials, centrally the crown over `VR` and unit title in surround, matching bench marks `XXXVIII`, together with one only small officer`s gilt tunic button to the same unit, c. 1856-1901. The Indian Staff Corps was a branch of the British Indian Army during Colonial rule. Separate Staff Corps were formed in 1861 for the Bengal, Madras and Bombay Armies, which constituted the Indian Army, although they were later amalgamated. They were meant to provide officers for the native regiments, and for the staff and army departments. They were also designed to offer placements for civil and political appointments for posts for which Indian Army officers might be eligible. Those officers who were already employed by the Army had the option to join the Staff Corps or to stay employed under the old conditions of work. In that sense it was seen by the majority of post-1860 entrants as synonymous with the Regular Officer Corps of the Indian Army. 109th Bombay Infantry (Central India) -An officer`s waistbelt clasp, bi-metal, gilt finish, bearing regimental device The 109th Regiment of Foot (Bombay Infantry) was an infantry regiment of the British Army from 1862 to 1881, when it was amalgamated into The Prince of Wales`s Leinster Regiment (Royal Canadians). The regiment was originally raised by the Honourable East India Company in 1853 as the 3rd Bombay (European) Regiment, and served in the Indian Mutiny of 1857. As with all other "European" units of the Company, they were placed under the command of the Crown in 1858, and formally moved into the British Army in 1862, ranked as the 109th Foot. As part of the Childers Reforms in 1881, the regiment was amalgamated with the 100th (Prince of Wales`s Royal Canadian) Regiment of Foot to form The Prince of Wales`s Leinster Regiment (Royal Canadians). Black Watch Volunteers Regiment - An officer`s waistbelt clasp, 19th Century, bearing regimental device. The Black Watch was formed as part of the Childers Reforms in 1881 when the 42nd (Royal Highland) Regiment of Foot (The Black Watch) was amalgamated with the 73rd (Perthshire) Regiment of Foot to form two battalions of the newly named Royal Highlanders (The Black Watch). The 1st Battalion then served in Africa taking part in the Highland Brigade`s dawn assault on the Egyptian position at Tel-el-Kebir in 1882. Two years later it was in the thick of the fight with the Mahdi`s tribesmen at El Teb and Tamai. The following year (1885) saw it taking part in the Nile Expedition and fighting at Kirbekan and Abu Klea. 18th Regiment of Foot - An officer`s waistbelt clasp, bi-metal, 19th Century, bearing regimental device, (4)
