PURDY, John (1773-1843). A Chart of the World, on Mercator's Projection; with the Tracks of the more Distinguished Modern Navigators. Regulated throughout, according to the best Scientific Determinations. London: Richard Holmes Laurie, 1823. Large engraved wall map of the world, 1250 x 1885mm, printed on 4 sheets, each approx. 665 x 960mm, mounted on linen with brown paper surround and edged with black fabric tape, the whole with blue silk border ribbon. (Minor browning and offsetting, very light soiling to extreme eastern edge.) Provenance: James Wyld (mapseller's printed label beneath imprint) – minor contemporary annotation, including the positions of the overwintering of Parry in northern Canada in 1823, as well as the out- and homeward tracks of the voyage of the Warren Hastings from the English Channel to Calcutta with small title within cartouche.

A VERY RARE EARLY EDITION OF PURDY'S EXTREMELY DETAILED WORLD MAP. The imprint states that the map was first published on 1 January 1821 by Richard Holmes Laurie, and that this edition contains 'Additions 1823'. The chart is specifically designed to show the great voyages of discovery from Columbus up to the time of publication, including those of such recent explorers as Parry and Ross (1818).
