OTAGAKI RENGETSU (1791-1875) AND MORI KANSAI (1814-1894) Meiji era (1868-1912), late 19th century Waka Poems Three kakejiku (hanging scrolls), the first, ink on paper, a collaboration between Rengetsu and Mori Kansai, depicting a hototogisu (lesser cuckoo), painted by Mori Kansai, flying above a waka poem by Rengetsu, signed Rengetsu to the lower left of the poem and signed Kansai Mori Koshuku with a seal at the lower right corner of the image, overall: 176cm x 45.5cm (69¼in x 17 7/8in); image: 99cm x 29.2cm (39in x 11 7/16in); the second, ink and slight colour on paper, depicting a sparrow standing beside green-leaf plants, beneath a poem by Rengetsu, signed Hachijuichi sai Rengetsu (Rengetsu at the age of 81), overall: 162cm x 46.2cm (63¾in x 18 3/16in); image: 103cm x 30cm (40½in x 11 13/16in); the third a fan-shaped painting in ink on paper, depicting a plum flower and a bud beside a waka poem, signed Hachiju sai Rengetsu (Rengetsu at the age of 80), overall: 129.5cm x 66cm (51in x 26in); image: 17cm x 49.5cm (6 11/16in x 19½in), each with a wood storage box.
