A GROUP OF FOUR KŌGŌ (INCENSE CONTAINERS) Meiji (1868-1912) or Taisho (1912-1926) era, late 19th/ early 20th century Comprising a rectangular box with canted corners and an inrōbuta (flush-fitting) lid decorated with a castle keep and pine trees in gold takamaki-e, inlaid crushed shell, and gold foil against a nashiji ground, the interior and base nashiji and the rims silver; A rectangular box with lobed corners and an inrōbuta lid decorated in Somada style with a pheasant beneath a flowering cherry tree in inlaid shell and gold foil on a glossy black ground, the rim decorated with a checkerboard pattern, the interior fitted with two boxes decorated in similar techniques with maple leaves floating on a stream, the interiors nashiji; A rectangular box in black lacquer with a kabusebuta (overhanging) lid with cut sides deeply carved on the surface with chrysanthemums; A shallow circular box with a flat inrōbuta lid decorated with a hozuki (Alkegengi officinarum) in iro-e takamaki-e and inlaid colored stone on a Gyōbu-nashiji ground, the interior and base nashiji 3 5/8 x 2 3/4 x 1in (9.2 xx 6.9 x 2.5cm), the largest (4).
