A LACQUERED-WOOD AND IVORY INLAID TWO-PANEL FOLDING SCREEN Meiji era (1868-1912), late 19th/early 20th century Decorated in high relief on both front panels, each inlaid with ivory, bone, and shell depicting three doves and three sparrows, either perched on flowering yamazakura (mountain cherry) branches or in flight, surrounded by stylized chrysanthemums painted on a red-lacquered ground, all within a hardwood frame carved with ho-o birds and stylized flowers; the reverse depicting two uguisu (bush warblers), either flying or perched on a flowering plum branch above spring flowers painted on a red-lacquered ground; unsigned. Overall: 187cm x 168cm (73 5/8in x 66 1/8in); each panel: 187cm x 83.5cm (75 5/8in x 32 7/8in). Footnotes: This lot has been registered in accordance with the Ivory Act (Section 10), reference no.CA2L9GE9.
