Oswald Couldrey (British 1882-1958) Bath of the Gupta queens, India signed 'Oswald Couldrey' (lower left) watercolour 17.8 x 24.8cm (7 x 9 3/4in). Footnotes: Oswald Couldrey is widely considered as both artist and poet. His artistic endeavours began in 1903 after graduating from Oxford University, when he started creating works depicting scenes of Hastings and his local town of Abingdon. In around 1906 Couldrey moved to India where he joined the Indian Civil Service. He grew very fond of India and its culture and continued to create works, such as this lot, that honoured his local landscape and ultimately lead him to hold the position as Principal of the Rajamundry College of Art in Andhra Pradesh.
