Govt House, Calcutta' (verso) watercolour 16.5 x 24.1cm (6 1/2 x 9 1/2in). Footnotes: Government House, Calcutta, was designed by architect Charles Wyatt for the 1st Marquess of Wellesley (Governor General of India from 1798-1805) as his official residence. Building work began in 1799 and construction was completed in 1803 at huge expense. In 1858 Government House became the official residence of the Viceroy of India and by 1911 it was occupied by the Lieutenant Governor of Bengal. Now known as The Raj Bhavan, it is currently the official residence of the Governor of West Bengal.
