HARRIS (WILLIAM CORNWALLIS) Portraits of the Game and Wild Animals of Southern Africa Delineated from Life in their Natural Haunts, FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, additional title with hand-coloured lithographed vignette, 30 hand-coloured lithographed plates, illustrations in the text, some spotting, opening 15 or so toned, 2 small wormholes to plate 22 and a couple of text leaves, damp-stain to lower fore-corner of final few leavs, modern half morocco, red gilt morocco spine label, t.e.g. [Abbey Travel 335; Czech, p.119; Mendelssohn I, pp.688-689; Schwerdt I, p.231], folio (545 x 370mm.), for the Proprietor, by Hullmanel & Walton, 1840 Footnotes: 'One of the rarest of all books dealing with African big game and sport, this monumental presentation depicts wild game of southern Africa as encountered and studied by Harris. The tinted lithographs highlighted in color by hand are especially lovely and make this volume exceptionally desirable' (Czech). Captain Harris, an officer in the East India Company's Bombay Engineers, was invalided to the Cape in 1835-1837, during which time he travelled, in the company of Richard Williamson, from Algoa Bay, by way of Somerset and the Orange River, until they reached the kraals of the Matabele chief Moselikatze. Provenance: Duke of Manchester, ownership stamp on front free endpaper.
