SHACKLETON (ERNEST HENRY) Parliamentary election flyer for Shackleton's Unionist Party candidature for the Dundee Parliamentary Election, 1906, printed card with oval quarter-length half-tone portrait of Shackleton above his facsimile signature, early ownership inscription of Andrew Howe, Broughty Ferry (near Dundee) on verso, 180 x 115mm, Printed and Published by D.C. Thomson & Co., Dundee, 1906; together with a one-volume 'Popular Edition' of The Heart of the Antarctic (1910) with the a cut signature of Shackleton ('Yours sincerely E.H.S.') pasted below the frontispiece portrait (2) Footnotes: Very rare election flyer for Shackleton's failed campaign to become a Member of Parliament in the 1906 election. He stood as the Unionist party candidate in Dundee. 'The bustle of the election suited Shackleton's spirit. He was exactly the man for charging from one meeting to another... to contest the seat for the Unionists an invincible optimist was required. Shackleton filled the bill' (R. Huntford, Shackleton, 1985). Despite his own personal popularity he was beaten, Shackleton recording that 'I got all the applause, and the other fellow got all the votes'.
