HURLEY (FRANK) 'Greenland Esquimaux Dogs', 'Wedell Seals at Home', 'A Grizzly Old Sea Elephant', 'A Sea Elephant Rookery', 'A Bow Seal Elephant and Calf', 'A Ross Seal', 'A Crabeater Seal', seven vintage gelatin silver prints, on the original thick card mount, original Fine Art Society Exhibition labels, with pencil title and exhibition number ('21', '75', '14', '15', '17', '19', '20') on verso, some toning, corners worn, 330 x 458mm., [Between 1911-1914] (7) Footnotes: Douglas Mawson's Australasian Antarctic Expedition was the first major scientific expedition by Australians beyond their shores, exploring some 6347 kilometres of mainland Antarctica as well as Macquarie Island. Seals and Elephant seals were essential as sources of heating and food for the members of the Expedition, but also studied in detail, with skins, samples of parasites and other materials collected. The subjects of 'Greenland Esquimaux Dogs' are Basilisk and Ginger Bitch, two of the fifty Greenland dogs taken on the expedition, and amongst the six that lost their lives alongside Lt. Belgrave Ninnis when his sledge plunged into a glacial crevasse on 14 December 1912.
