MAURITIUS - PHOTOGRAPHY Rare album of approximately 130 views of Mauritius, including sugar plantations at Charmarel and L'Etoile (5), the Davidson's house, gardens and surrounding landscape at Beau Bassin (c.50), St. Denis (2), Port Louis (2, the race course), Baie du Cap (3), Pouce and Moka mountains (4), Salazie village, Andre, Hell Bourg and surrounds (c.40), botanical gardens at Pamplemousses, and others, mostly albumen prints, mostly mounted 2 per pages (typical size 110 x 170mm.), 10 larger one per page (195 x 240mm.), and approximately 10 smaller, nearly all captioned in ink on mounts, occasional spotting to mounts, half a leaf cut away, approximately 10 related photographs (some Mauritius) and a card addressed to Davidson at Beau Bassin (1902) loosely inserted, contemporary morocco gilt, upper cover with monogram initials ('G.W.D.[avidson'), worn, covers detached, folio (355 x 265mm.), c.1877-1885 Footnotes: RARE ALBUM OF NINETEENTH CENTURY PHOTOGRAPHS OF MAURITIUS, compiled by a British merchant living at Beau Bassin. Includes a good group showing the family house ('The Castle'), bungalow and gardens with family members (some playing tennis), and sugar plantations. Approximately 50 images record a journey inland to the valley between Salazie and Hell Bourg, with others of waterfalls and the mountains at Moka. The majority seem to be from a private camera. There are 9 larger images of the house at Beau Bassin, signed in the image (?'C.W.J.', with negative numbers) from 1880s. Provenance: George Walter Davidson, of The Castle, Beau Bassin, Mauritius, gifted from his wife Johanna Sarah Davidson (nƩe Humphrey), manuscript inscription with coloured monograms; their son F.H.
