Robert Armitage Sterndale (British, 1839-1902) A tiger enjoying its prey signed 'R A/Sterndale' (lower left); bears inscription ' R.A. Sterndale/Bombay/1885' (verso) oil on canvas 46 x 30.8cm (18 1/8 x 12 1/8in). Footnotes: Robert Armitage Sterndale was a British naturalist, statesman and fellow of the Zoological Society of London. At the age of seventeen, Sterndale moved to India to work for the East India Company. Having a keen interest in natural history and geography, he was fascinated by the habitat that surrounded him and as a result he joined the Journal of the Bombay Natural History Society in its founding year in 1883. It is believed that the idea of starting a journal was conceived by him. In the years that followed, Sterndale published several books documenting his experiences and observations of the wildlife in India, including 'Natural History of the Mammalia of India and Ceylon, Seonee, or Camp Life on the Satpura Range' and 'Denizens of the Jungles'. The latter being a series of sketches illustrating the form and behaviour of the wildlife.
