[EVERETT, DAVID. 1770-1813.] An Essay on the Rights and Duties of Nations, Relative to Fugitives From Justice; Considered with Reference to the Affair of the Chesapeake. Boston: Printed by David Carlisle, 1807. 8vo 98 x 5 in.), wrappers, 62 pages. Front wrapper repaired at front edge, spine reinforced with paper tape which has discolored to brown, damp staining to rear wrapper, date stamp ('NOV 1950') and 19th-century numeral notation ('345') to rear, previous owner's signature to front, pencil notations to front including author's name under printed attribution 'By an American', pencil notations to inside front wrapper and first page of text, occasional numbering in ink (19th-century hand) to upper outside corners of pages. This pamphlet was written in response to the Chesapeake-Leopard Affair, which grew out of a naval incident on June 22, 1807, in which a British warship, the Leopard, boarded an American frigate, the Chesapeake, and removed four men accused of being deserters from the Royal Navy. The Chesapeake's commander, James Barron, surrendered after having fired only one shot and was subsequently court-martialed and relieved of duty. In America, the incident led to calls for war with Great Britain. David Everett was a Boston newspaper editor.
