Charles Beebe Stuart (American, 1814-1881)
Stuart began his career in construction before being elected as the New York State Engineer and Surveyor. He left that position after one year to accept an appointment as the new Engineer-in-Chief with the Bureau of Construction, Equipment, and Repair of the United States Navy. During the American Civil War, Stuart raised the 50th New York Engineer Regiment, building fortifications and bridges for the Army of the Potomac. Before he died, Stuart became the Chief Engineer in the construction of the Conotton Valley Railway.

Bumping to the corners with small cloth losses. Overall scuffing and minor soiling. Previous owner’s name in ink on first free endpaper. Foxing throughout.
