RUSSIA, 19th century school, photographer.
An early mounted photograph of the 'Tsar Bell' in Moscow. [?Moscow: undated but circa 1865-1885].A lightly albuminised photograph (10 x 8 inches), printed from a glass negative, and inscribed on the negative 'no 2', laid onto a thin card mount (21 7/8 x 18 inches)Condition: light spotting to photograph, tears, chips and toning to the mount.
The largest bell in the world. I have not been able to track the photographer down, but this image was used as the 'artwork' for a wood-engraving included in a book published in the early 1890s (see 'The Pictorial Treasury of Famous Men and Famous Deeds' [London & NY: F. Warne, 1893], p.49) but the clothes and form of the photograph both suggest an earlier date – hence my 'circa date' of 1865-1885.
The Tsar Bell, also known as the Tsarsky Kolokol, Tsar Kolokol III, or Royal Bell, is a 6.14-metre (20.1 ft) tall, 6.6-metre (22 ft) diameter bell on display on the grounds of the Moscow Kremlin. The bell was commissioned by Empress Anna Ivanovna, niece of Peter the Great.
