This hand coloured nautical chart appeared in the French edition of John Barrow's book on his sojourn and travels in South Africa in the late 1797 - 1805(Nouveau voyage dans la partie méridionale de l’Afrique).
In 1797, Barrow accompanied Lord Macartney to Cape Town, as private secretary,. They commissioned hydrographic studies along the Cape Coast - this chart is from the hydrographic survey of Algoa Bay.
Barrow's map of the Cape Colony located Algoa Bay the correct latitude and this played an important role in correcting the overly pointed shape of the south African coast up to the end of the 18th century. The chart records the co-ordinates of Cape Recife - correct latitude but the longitude is almost one degree too far east (a common error at that time). Fort Frederick is shown above the Baakens River.
