Homann Heirs Planiglobii Terrestris Mappa Universalis

This is an attractive, hand-coloured world map was published over at least five decades from 1746. It was was produced by their heirs of Johann Baptist Homann [drawn by Georg Lowitz after a drawing by Johann Haas(1746)].

The map depicts the western hemisphere and eastern hemisphere in double hemispheric projection. The far north-west of today's Canada is left blank. Greenland is connected to North America. There are four maps of different projections of the world. Figures I and II show the view of the world from the North and South Poles, respectively. Figure III in the lower right corner shows the view of the world angled towards Nuremburg. Figure IV in the lower left corner shows the opposite global area from figure III or the antipodes of Nuremburg. Between figures IV, II and II are two spherical diagrams of the world showing the parts of the globe illuminated by the sun and in darkness at different times.

Surrounding the cartouches are sea creatures emerging from the water, a merman blowing a conch shell, broken tusks, a parrot and a deer amongst floral decoration .

The map comes from Shul-atlas von zantzig general-und special-land karten by the Homann Erben (Homann Heirs). The map has an alternative title presented within the cartouche on the right: Mappe _ Monde, qui represente les deux Hemispheres savoir celui de l'Orient et celui de l'Occident tir e des quatre Cartes generals de feu M. le Professeur Hasius. dress e par Mr. G. M. Lowitz, etpubli e par les Heritiers de Homann. l'An 1746.

This mid 18th century map was damaged and at some time laid on firm paper board, probably because of two large repaired tears, which extend into the map area, and marginal tears that do not penetrate the map. The map has subsequently been tastefully hand coloured. It is an authentic historical map with fascinating geography that is typical of the time in which it was produced. The map has wide margins and will frame very well.
