Pieter Mortier Carte Particuliere des Costes de Cap du Bone Esperance This 1700 sea chart of the
This 1700 sea chart of the Cape of Good Hope is by Pieter (AKA Pierre) Mortier – maps and charts with his impression are uncommonly in the market.
The chart was published in Le Neptune François .... in Paris by Hubert Jaillot, 1693 [but this map is from a 1700 publication, with the Jaillot title page, by: Pierre Mortier in Amsterdam].
The insets are early depictions of the Dutch colony, showing very inaccurately the Green Point area and the colony’s first grain mill.
This is arguably the first chart to show the Augulhas Bank and to show Algoa Bay at the correct latitude.
The map is in fine condition.
