Covens & Mortier Carte d'Afrique. This is an important map in the history of the mapping of
This is an important map in the history of the mapping of Africa. It is the Covens & Mortier edition of Delisle's second map of Africa (1722).
One prominent feature of this updated map is the appearance of Lake Maravi (Malawi and formerly Nyasa) in Central Africa. Furthermore, the Senegal and Niger Rivers are correctly separated. The colouring highlights the major kingdoms and tribes as the Europeans understood them to exist. There are two cartouches, one for the title and the other an explanation of the scale of the graticule.
The Covens and Mortier map is known with at least two different headlines but this map does not have one; it is an update of the map with a headline and was published in ca. 1740; notable improvements are the spelling of Stellenbosch (from Hellenbok), and an engraved paragraph on the discovery of the Cape of Hood Hope.
The impression is sharp, the paper is heavy and in in fine condition. The map is in original outline colour and the cartouche has also been coloured. A most collectable map in fine condition.
