Cartier. A Limited Edition 18K gold manual wind reversible rectangular wristwatchModel: Tank Basculante 150th Anniversary 'I Love Cartier' Collection Privee, Limited Edition No.18/150Date: Purchased 25th May 1997Movement: Jewelled manual windDial: Silvered with guilloché engraved centre, black Roman numerals, secret signature at 7, black inner minute track with 5 minute markers, blued steel sword handsCase: Brushed and polished reversible rectangular, cabochon set below 6, personal engraving to reverse, No.A109227Strap/Bracelet: Burgundy Cartier alligator leatherBuckle/Clasp: Signed 18K gold folding claspSigned: Case, dial & movementSize: 23mm x 37mm Accompaniments: Cartier box, outer card, International Guarantee Certificate, instruction bookletFootnotes:The Tank Basculante was first designed in 1932 and was aimed at an elite clientele looking to protect their timepieces from impact whilst predominantly playing sport. The case is composed of 3 parts allowing the central body to be inverted in order to present a smooth solid case back thus protecting the more vulnerable glass side. Due to its similar first introduction date, the Tank Basculante is often compared with the 1931 Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso. Although sharing a similar goal and developed by the same company Spécialités Horlogers, the Basculante differs from the Reverso in several key ways. In particular the method used to invert the case on the Basculante is via a swinging frame that pulls the central body out towards you before flipping and replacing. In comparison the Reverso is set within a track that allows you to slide the body out to the side before turning over. The original production of the Basculante was quite limited before being briefly revived in the 1990s. The current example hails from the late 90s and was presented in celebration of the 150th Anniversary of Cartier. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: YY Subject to CITES regulations when exporting items outside of the EU, see clause 13.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Cartier. A very fine and exceptionally rare iteration of the 'Pebble' manual wind wristwatch from the London workshopsModel: Pebble 'Turtle'Date: London Hallmark for 1975Movement: Jewelled Cal.P383 manual wind, glucydur balance, No.2058962Dial: Cream diamond form, black Roman numerals conforming to shape of dial, black inner minute track, blued steel sword handsCase: Polished round, unusual small 'turtle feet' lugs, diamond form aperture for dial, back secured by 4 screws, cabochon set crown, inside case back stamped JC, stamped 9972Strap/Bracelet: Black faux crocodile leather Buckle/Clasp: 18K gold folding clasp, numbered 1644 and stamped Jacques Cartier, London Hallmark for 1971Signed: Dial signed Cartier, movement signed Jaeger-LeCoultre, case stamped for Jacques CartierSize: 36mmFootnotes:Cartier started to produce wristwatches in their London workshops in the 1960s at the absolute height of the 'swinging sixties' when London's influence and creativity was reverberating around the world. At this time, under the oversight of Jean-Jacques Cartier, Cartier created some of the most interesting and now sought after designs of the vintage watch world such as the Maxi Oval and the Crash. Each watch was hand crafted in the jewellery workshops before being handed to the watchmakers to make up into the finished piece. Each piece would then take approximately a week to produce ensuring their quality and by default their scarcity.During this period Cartier London designed the watch that bears the nickname of the 'Pebble' or in the United States the 'Baseball'. Using the simple juxtaposition of a square within a circle sums up the clear design definitions that create distinctive and original watch designs. By softening the square with rounded edges and flipping the point to twelve o'clock makes it distinctively Cartier. There are estimated 6 large size 'Pebbles' in existence with five in yellow gold and one in white gold with a black dial. Only one other is known to exist with the 'Turtle' lugs which is in the Cartier collection making this probably the only chance to acquire this particular design. It is worth mentioning the diminutive lugs on the overtly round form is echoed in the Ballon Bleu case design showing the DNA of Jean-Jacques Cartier and his influence in the last oeuvre from Cartier. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

MICHAEL Z. BERGER CO. POUR PABLO PICASSO. TRES RARE MONTRE BRACELET EN ACIER MOUVEMENT MECANIQUE MICHAEL Z. BERGER CO. FOR PABLO PICASSO. A VERY RARE STAINLESS STEEL MANUAL WIND BRACELET WATCH Date: Circa 1960Movement: 17-jewel manual windDial: Silvered, black 'Pablo Picasso' forming the hour markers, gilt lance hands with luminous inserts, centre secondsCase: Brushed and polished round, screw down back, stepped bezelStrap/Bracelet: Fitted expandable braceletSigned: Movement signed Michael Z. Berger Co, inside case back stamped M.T. Co.Size: 32mmFootnotes:Picasso is revered in the art world and beyond for such masterpieces as Guernica, La Vie and Girl Before a Mirror, but in the world of horology, a small collection of relatively humble timepieces owned by the father of Modern Art are considered the Holy Grail of watches. In horological circles Pablo Picasso is well known from the often irreverent photographic portraits in which he wore many of his watches prominently. Makers of these watches include the greats like his Rolex GMT Master, a Jaeger-LeCoultre triple calendar moon phase and some say even a Patek Ref.2497 although there are no images presently that support this. One that also often appeared in photographs is the present lot. There is a tradition in watchmaking to replace numerals with the letters to spell out a name. It is serendipitous that Pablo Picasso is 12 letters long and it was something he was surely aware of and was waiting to create when he had the chance. Picasso certainly enjoyed wearing and showing off this watch as visible in many portraits. The most famous of these are the iconic images captured by Cecil Beaton of Picasso in the 60s. In these images, part of the Cecil Beaton Studio Archive, the characters forming Picasso's name can be clearly seen as he stands in his studio with cigarette in hand. This piece of history was personally gifted by the artist to his friend and fellow creative, the late Greek sculptor Lela Kanellopoulou. She met Picasso at the Cahiers d'Art, having collaborated with Christian Zervos, publisher of the important Cahiers d'Art magazine and of the catalogue raisoné of the works of Picasso. According to the vendor, one of Lela's relations, she was someone of intrigue for Picasso who gave her the pet name 'La Belle Helene' as a reference to her beauty, Greek nationality and background in Archaeology. She told her nephew that one day in the 1960s, Picasso took the watch off his wrist and gave it to her, one of a few gifts along with a ceramic of his then wife Jacqueline. The current lot offered is a manual wind steel bracelet watch by little known Swiss watch Producer Michael Z. Berger who still exist in the United states of America producing branded products. The case is signed M.T. Co of Hong Kong who also still exist producing branded products. Only two other named dial watches like this are known with both of them residing in the possession of the Picasso foundation. As such it makes this particular watch likely to be the only example to be offered in the public domain – and with the unique provenance of being gifted directly by one of the 20th Century's greatest artists. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
