Three: Sapper J. Dolby, Royal Engineers Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 4 clasps, Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Johannesburg, South Africa 1901 (5868 Sapr., R.E.); British War and Victory Medals (3552 Spr., R.E.) very fine (3) £100-140 Joseph Dolby was born in Hackney, London, in 1879. A Carpenter by occupation and a member of the R.E. Volunteers, he attested for one years service with the Royal Engineers at Dalston Barracks on 24 January 1900, aged 20 years. With the Royal Engineers he served in South Africa, March 1900-April 1901, being discharged on the termination of his engagement on 29 April 1901. With the onset of the Great War, he again volunteered for service at Victoria Park Square in December 1915. With the Royal Engineers he served with the B.E.F. from 29 September 1916. Appointed a Lance-Corporal in October 1917, he was transferred to the Class “Z” Reserve in March 1919. With copied service papers and m.i.c. together with a CD containing the same.

`Playback` an illustrated memoir with forewords by Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, written by George Martin, this edition is limited to 2000 copies, each signed by Sir George Martin CBE and individually numbered, this copy is no.169, printed by Genesis Publications Ltd, 2002, this copy with numerous photographic illustrations bound in black leather with a chromium plated plate on the front with the books title and author in silver letters to the spine, all contained in a Solander box with speaker illustrations inlaid to the cover,titles in chromium plate, enclosed in the box is an unopened six CD compilation box set with original cellophane cover, the whole enclosed in the original cardboard packaging that the book came in. This is a virtually mint edition of this unusual book. (illustrated)

ARMSTRONG LOUIS: (1901-1971) American Jazz Trumpeter. Ink signature (`Louis Armstrong`) on a page removed from an autograph album, matted in white beneath a photograph of Satchmo playing his trumpet. Framed and glazed in a plain black wooden frame to an overall size of 12 x 18.5. Together with Chuck Berry (1926- ) American Rock `n` Roll Guitarist and Singer. Signed colour 17.5 x 23.5 poster issued for Berry`s 75th Birthday celebration at The Pageant in the Loop, 18th October 2001, featuring a full length image of Berry playing his guitar. Signed in bold black ink to a light area at the centre of the image. Professionally matted in black and white and framed and glazed in a silver and black colour frame to an overall size of 26 x 32. Also including an unsigned presentation CD of Coldplay`s album Parachutes (2000) mounted alongside an engraved plaque, presented to Tower in recognition of more than 300,000 copies of the album being sold in the United Kingdom. [ELGAR EDWARD]: (1857-1934) English Composer. ELGAR CAROLINE ALICE (1848-1920) English Author, wife of Edward Elgar. Series of 32 A.Ls.S., C. A. Elgar, and a couple signed with initials C. A. E., also including a few unsigned notes or incomplete letters, seventy five pages (total), 4to and 8vo, Brinkwells, Fittleworth, Sussex, May-December 1918, to Mrs. Wright, the Elgar`s housekeeper at Severn House in Hampstead. Elgar writes to her housekeeper regarding various domestic matters, asking for furnaces to be lit and hot water bottles prepared for their return to London, enquiring whether the gardener has attended to the grapes, advising her of a delivery of wood and giving instructions on where it is to be stored, also congratulating her and her husband on the birth of their child, and in some letters also makes reference to her husband, in part, `Could you find some stockings of Sir Edward`s & post them to me. I think there are 2 or 3 pairs, & he wears them so much here, I did not bring enough...` (undated note, unsigned), `The police want a list of missing things-I had no time to examine suits in Sir E`s wardrobe. Would it be giving you or Mr. Wright too much trouble to send me a list of coats & trousers &c wh. are on the shelves. Then I cd. say what is gone....I left the room as I found it in case a detective shd. want to see it` (undated note, unsigned), `Sir Edward wants to have the piano now in the drawing room sent down here` (n.d.), `I am glad to say the piano arrived all safely this morning & the men managed to get it across the garden into the studio & Sir Edward has been playing some lovely things already.` (n.d.), `Sir Edward much wants some more music paper as soon as possible. Would you kindly get it for him from Severn House & post it....The paper is on the seat at the end of the billiard room...Sir E. wd. like about 30 sheets...` (8th December 1918). Some light age wear, generally G, 32 Edward Elgar worked on his Quintet in A minor for Piano and String Quartet Op.84, and two other major pieces of chamber music during the summer of 1918 while staying at Fittleworth. The composer`s biographer, W. H. Reed, considered that all three were `influenced by the quiet and peaceful surroundings during that wonderful summer.`
