A Sword Of Viking Type, Oakeshott's Type XI Late-10th To Mid-12th Century In excavated condition blackened overall, with broad tapering double-edged blade with central fuller over most of its length on each side, and extending slightly into the tang, the fuller on each side of the forte with copper-inlaid cross potent, hilt comprising quillons of rectangular section slightly tapering to the tips, flat tapering tang, and large Brazil-nut pommel 88 cm. blade, 100.5 cm. overall Footnotes: Provenance Sold in these Rooms, Antique Arms & Armour, 23 May 2018, lot 174 For two swords of very similar type, one in the Nationalmuseet, Copenhagen, and the other formerly in the D'Acre Edwards and Ewart Oakeshott Collections, see Ewart Oakeshott, Records Of The Medieval Sword, 1991, p. 55 XI.3 and p. 61.
