A First Half of the 18th Century Carved Ivory Fan, the monture with figures to the guards and gorge. The paper leaf, mounted à l'Anglaise, shows the return of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15, 11-32), the parable in the Bible where a father welcomes the return of his younger son despite him having squandered his inheritance, simply thankful for his return. The verso is simply painted with a landscape. Guard length 10.75 inches or 27.5cm CONDITION REPORT: Issues with the join of ribs to gorge sticks, in that one is loose, one stick is missing, and others have been re-secured clumsily in the past. The rivet is too tight, probably due to the addition of the loop, and the fan is stiff to open.

Lot 4016

Grand Tour Fan, circa 1776, (note date to right hand side of leaf), depicting the Bay of Naples and Vesuvius by day in the central panel and by night in the smaller panel to the right. Between these two scenes is a poem in Italian. To the left, a musical score accompanies a verse in Italian. The double skin leaf, mounted on ivory, has a trompe l'oeil design of a striped ribbon, which is repeated on the verso, surrounding a closer image of Vesuvius. The carved guards both feature the same chinoiserie figure and carving that features on the gorge. Contained in a pale pink 18th century card fan tube, onto which is written "The ??? painted with ???gold by Sir J Reynolds". Guard length 28cm CONDITION REPORT: . One gorge stick is loose but present, and has torn the underside of the leaf, with evidence of a previous attempt to re-secure. The undersides of both guards have a plain ivory panel, which are not matching, suggesting a period replacement to one. The leaf is generally rubbed on the folds, with tiny slits to the top of several folds, but all writing is clear. The verso is grubby, slightly foxed and rubbed, with further tiny tears.

Lot 4050

Death and The Maiden: A Very Unusual Fan, the monture of plain light pink mother of pearl, the coffee coloured silk satin leaf painted both sides. To the recto, a scene of a young man or prince sheltering under a large tree, taking respite from the weight of the deathly pale maiden dressed in white on his shoulder, as the Grim Reaper approaches from across a river bank, pink flamingos paddling to the background, carrying his spade, his robe belted with a cross on a chain **. To the verso, painted on a darker ginger silk, two cherubs hold flower garlands, decorating entwined initials, a green dragon and a banner beneath, dating the fan to the 11th February 1885 (or 1895), possibly in Portuguese. One word could be a name beginning with A which would relate to one of the initials. No signature noted. Guard length 12.75 inches or 32.5cm. Together with a bone fan, 19th century, the pale pink cotton leaf painted with a gentle scene of a shepherdess being pursued by her beau. Signed Guronnet (?). The verso of plain cream cotton. Guard length 10.5 inches or 26.5cm (2)In many great artworks, a maiden is portrayed as wearing white, with long cascading tresses, as the Grim Reaper approaches. Is the river in this depiction signifying the river Stix that the dead must cross on their way to Hades?**An alternative offered by an FCI member is that the figure is that of a Carmelite monk wearing a brown habit and a Christian cross. The monks were known to dig graves and indeed there is one here***Another alternative offered by an FCI member considers that that this scene depicts a version of a painting by Girodet that is at the Louvre (The burial of Atala), depicting the tragic love story of Atala or the love of two savages in the wilderness that was written by Chateaubriand (died 1848) that gave Girodet the subject of one of his most popular paintings. Set in primitive America of the 17th century, Atala is the story of a young Christian metisse who falls madly in love with Chactas, an 'Indian' whom she has saved from a death sentence. Taken in by a missionary, Father Aubry, after a long 'walkabout' the young lovers cannot live out their passion. Trapped by the vow made to her mother to dedicate herself to religion, Atala chooses suicide in order to avoid succumbing to her passion, despite Chactas' willingness to convert so as to be able to marry her. CONDITION REPORT: . The first fan has repairs on the shoulder to both guards. A sliver of mop is missing near the top of the upper guard. One gorge stick is loose from the rib, a repair having failed, and the lower edge of the leaf is a little stained, probably from attempts to secure the gorge sticks. Similar residue is apparent here and there near the side and top edges. The smaller fan is sound, save for loss to the top border binding the layers together.

The ones to the left are possibly warriors, wearing body plates, and black hats with red crowns, a more elaborately dressed man to their side. Overall height when open 31 inches or 79 cm including the short handles. When closed, 19 inches or 48cm CONDITION REPORT: . one stick has split and is secured with Sellotape.

Lot 4225

The Chinese Tea Ceremony: A Mid-18th Century Ivory Fan, the slender monture of ivory, the only decoration being to the upper guards, where a lightly carved border encloses various motifs carved withing three panels. The double paper leaf, with detailed painting in strong colours, shows a family gathered outdoors to take tea, a teapot and cup placed in the centre, a patterned low table to the left. Within a background of colourful, stylised flowers, one person is occupied reaching into a tree. One of the ladies carries either a fixed fan or mirror, one boy carries a spear. Some sections of the robes worn appear to be silk applied to the leaf. The verso is simply painted with flowers. Guard length 10.75 inches or 27.5cm CONDITION REPORT: . One gorge stick is detached by present, the leaf slightly torn there this section has moved. Good strong colours.

Lot 4226

A Large Qing Dynasty Chinese Carved Ivory Brisé Fan, circa 1850, the two guards deeply carved with pagodas, figures and stylised trees, the eighteen inner sticks lightly carved recto/verso in a similar fashion, the stick tips curved. Lot 4235

A Rare Circa 1840's Chinese Carved Mother-of-Pearl Brisé Fan, Qing Dynasty, the eighteen inner sticks and two guards showing shades of pink within the overall cream pearl. The guards are quite deeply carved with a figure at the tip and a dragon fills the remaining stick. The recto, with a small oval left uncarved for initials, is lightly carved throughout with figures, trees, and a large quantity of buildings, including a large pagoda. The verso is carved in a similar fashion. The rounded tips feature small animals, birds, and figures involved in different daily activities. Guard length 7.25 inches or 18.5cm CONDITION REPORT: There are 18 inner sticks and two guards. The central oval spans 3 sticks. To the left of the oval are 8 sticks. To the right there are only 7. This means there may be a stick missing. To try to determine this, the bottom end of the fan, where the sticks are linked by the rivet, has been examined. This shows that one stick is in the wrong place, as it is longer than the ones to each side, thus not making a smooth shape as would be expected. No chips or cracks or repairs to sticks have been noted.

Johann Andreas Schmidt was a German fencing master born circa 1650 in Marienberg, Germany. Sometime after 1671 (or after 1675), he studied fencing under the fencing master Johann Georg and Johannes Georgius Bruchius in Amsterdam. Schmidt's impressive fencing abilities were illustrated by a story that in 1712, as a result of a bet of 10 ducats, armed only with a stick, he took on "six strong farmers" in Altdorf in the area of Nuremberg and defeated them all, thus winning the bet. The following year, in 1713, he established his own fencing school in Nuremberg. In 1721 Georg Wilhelm von Brandenburg-Bayreuth (1678-1726) the ruler of Bayreuth appointed Schmidt as a Page Fencing Master following the successful defeat and disarming of two fencing masters. He was awarded the appointment as a Page Fencing Master with a wage of 1,000 guilders. After the death of his patron probably after 1726, Schmidt returned to Nuremberg to continue his teachings. He then moved to teach in both Stuttgart and finally in Tübingen, where he died.
