The seeming absence of an engraved duke's coronet suggests that rather than being made for Charles, 3rd Duke of Bolton (1685-1754) they may instead have been made for his brother Harry, 4th Duke of Bolton (1691-1759) or his nephew Charles, 5th Duke of Bolton (c.1718-1765). Each fully marked underneath. Further engraved with scratch weight 'No 1 19''0'; 'No 2 19''13'; 'No 3 19=9' and 'No 4 19=15'. Two sockets further numbered 'No 3' and 'No 4', The marks underneath are generally clear. There is overall surface scratching and wear, consistent with age and use. The wear is noticeable as a softening to the high points and to the engraving, which is only partially visible. There is some bruising to the sockets on some of the sticks and a repair of the socket of the stick numbered 'No 1'. There has been a repair to one nozzle.
