Taxidermy: A Cased Late Victorian King Charles' Spaniel "Charlie" (Canis lupus familiaris), circa 1860-1880, a full mount adult with head turning very slightly to the right, wearing a red silk scarf around his neck, stood upon a cushioned carpeted floor, set against a pale blue painted interior, enclosed within a period single-glass display case, 82.5cm by 24cm by 44.5cm. "Charlie lived at the Wheel Inn, Ticknall, south Derbyshire, sometime between 1860 and 1880. He learned to pick up coins that had dropped on the floor (which would have been covered with sawdust), take them to the top of the garden and bury them, to be collected later by the Landlord Mr John Mason, or his tenant, William Freeman. One day as Charlie ran up the garden path, the Landlord threw a stick for him to retrieve, sadly it struck poor Charlie on the head, which proved fatal, his master, no doubt filled with remorse, had him preserved. Charlie was given to Harold Soar, circa 1962, along with a mounted Portland Sheep head, which belonged (when alive) to Sir Vauncey Harpur Crewe at Calke Abbey, descended from the only flock in existence at the time, acquired by Sir George Crewe directly from Portland Dorset"Charlie was taken to John Burton taxidermist, in June 2011 for restoration at a cost of £175,. The paper within the case was replaced in an identical colour to the original, the upholstery was cleaned and Charlie was dry powder cleaned and brushed, he has no hair to the verso.
