A pair of George V silver table candlesticks, shaped oval form with tapered stick, reeded border and removable sconces, by Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co Ltd, hallmarks London 1911, height 29cm, weighted bases,Both in very good original condition, purchased by current vendor from Sotheby's Silver, Vertu & Ceramics Sale - 23rd October 2000 - £800. Sconce hallmarks match base, top lip of one stick is slightly bent on one edge along with a few minor dents and creases to the neck and base as well as underneath the base, the other candlestick has a very small split in the silver around the waist as well as a few minor dents all over and a larger bulge in the underside of the base ending in a small split, both are surface scratched all over with rubbing to high points and slightly rubbed hallmarks.

AN EARLY 18TH CENTURY COLLECTION OF 246 MEDICAL AND CULINARY RECIPES COMPILED BY MARY WELBY, DATED 1712 the remedies and recipes including a Sovereign Medicine against ye Plague, a worm glister, How to make a Wig, a curious means by which to "scare crows" (pitch brimstone and gunpowder with grease in a bag tied to a stick), Mrs Palmer's Elixir, several for 'a canser' and 'fitts', for a broken belly, chalybiat (sic) powder, poctorall drink, salves, wines and cordial, pies, pickles, preserves, oyster Loaves and other buns and cakes, written in ink in a fine clear hand on 151 of 250 numbered pp, index at end, a few entries in later 18th and 19th c hands, folio (31 x 20cm), contemporary vellum with double filletsProvenance: Mary Welby (1685-1760) of Denton Manor near Grantham. The daughter and heiress of Thomas Towers of Haddenam, Cambridge, she married in 1706 Richard Welby (1658-1713) of Denton Manor with whom she was to have six children, including twin boys. A year after his death she erected a magnificent memorial to his memory in Denton Church. It features a bold, free standing life size statue of Welby below which she listed his many virtues, calling him "Ye Best of Husbands". He died according to Mary, "after a tedious sickness which he bore with exemplary patience", perhaps aided by his wife's recourse to the remedies in this book
An Isle of Man pottery figure of a bull inscribed to base "Shebeg I.O.M. A. Thompson Thevassesck Challenge at Three Years", together with an Isle of Man pottery figure of a shepherd and sheepdog seated inscribed "Shebeg I.O.M. A. Thompson" and a Beswick figure of "C.H. Bayldone Baronet" CONDITION REPORTS Beswick figure has general wear and tear conducive with age and use. Shepherd and dog - dog has a chip to the ear. The shepherd's stick appears to have been broken during firing at base and some flaking to the paintwork. Some areas of crazing. Generally in need of a light clean. The bull has a weird finish - you can clearly see paintbrush strokes and it feels a bit dull to the touch in large areas. Strong areas of gloss to the underside, etc. Under UV shows up as entirely black. Unsure if this is an original feature or whether it has been restored heavily throughout.
