A.R. Penck (German 1939-2017) DREI VON VIELEN signed acrylic over silkscreen on canvas 130 by 160cmProvenance: Galerie Frank Hanel, Private Collection Cape TownIn Drei Von Vielen (Three of Many), Penck employed the method of producing a series of silkscreened prints over which he applied acrylic paint. In this case the silkscreened image consists of three stick figures, typical of Penck’s Standart period. Unlike typical editioned prints, Penck’s use of paint, marks and colours differ vastly with each version. With the Drei Von Vielen series Penck has adhered to a colour combination of black and red, specifically including crosses and suns with extending rays, causing the separate Drei Von Vielen works to resemble each other far more than other acrylic over silkscreen series’ that the artist produced. While Penck did not edition his acrylic over silkscreen on canvas works, there is evidence of a few versions of Drei Von Vielen having sold recently on the auction market. In June 2020, a version of Penck’s Drei Von Vielen sold at Christie’s Online Auction of Post-War & Contemporary Art for $ 77 000 (including premium), proving once again that A.R Penck is a highly collectable artist who continues to gain momentum on the auction market.
