A.R. Penck and Lucke TPT (German 1939 - 2017) LUCKE NR 1 ENERGETIKlabel bearing artist's name, artist's collective, date, title, medium and dimensions on the reverseoil on canvas151 by 130cmPROVENANCEGalerie Fränk Hanel In 1971 A.R Penck put together the artist’s collective Die Lücke TPT along with fellow artists Harald Gallasch, and Wolfganf Opitz, as a socialist act. During their time together, the group focussed on the process and production of their collaborative based art, rather than the aesthetics of the work produced. The group’s name translates to ‘the gap’, as Penck was referencing the lack of teamwork in the sterile East German art world. Die Lücke unfortunately dissolved in 1976 due to constant harassment by the Stasi. Lücke Nr 1 Energetik was painted during Penck’s time with Lücke_TPT. While other collaborative works produced by the collective leaned more formally to neo-expressionism, lot 476 is more restrained, containing a number of pictorial signs, more akin to Penck’s standart or stick figure motifs. This may indicate Penck’s level of involvement with the production of this particular work. This work is typical of the neo-expressionism practiced by certain artist’s in Germany at the time, such as Markus Lupert, Jorg Immendorff, Georg Baselitz, Anselm Kiefer and Sigmar Polke. Lot 476 incorporates bright colours and a more spontaneous use of mark making, and format which was larger than Penck had used in the past. Neo-expressionism encouraged bright colours in order to achieve subjective means. Neo-expressionism was a direct reaction against the preceding art movements of Minimalism and Conceptualism, which distanced the artist’s hand from the artwork. Artists found a redemptive quality of art when working in Neo Expressioninsm. Just as Penck’s works have been gaining value significantly on the auction market since the artist’s death in 2017, so have the works produced by Lücke-TPT. Stephan Welz & Co sold a work by the artist on our October 2020 Auction for R 350 000 on the hammer. https://www.artforum.com/passages/hannah-klemm-on-a-r-penck-1939-2017-68826 https://www.theartstory.org/movement/neo-expressionism/
A.R. Penck (German 1939 - 2017) STANDART SCULPTUREmarblediameter: 27cmPROVENANCEGalerie Frank Hänel; Private Collection, Cape Town While mostly known for his prints, paintings and drawings, German expressionist A.R. Penck produced a number of sculptures, usually using bronze or stainless steel, and occasionally using terracotta or wood. During our premier auction in October 2020 we sold Holzplstik (1972) a small wooden sculpture for R 50 000 as well as Holzplastik (1992) one of an edition of five of the same sculpture cast in bronze twenty years later, which sold for R 150 000. It is quite rare to find a marble sculpture produced by A.R. Penck, especially one that is so finished in its application, as opposed to the spontaneity of his prints and paintings. It appears that the artist used a dremmel with specific attachments to carve his typical standart figures and other signs and symbols so uniformly and delicately, just a millimetre or two into the surface of the marble. The outermost layer of the marble sculpture has been left rough and unpolished, while the indentation of the figures and signs is polished, revealing the subtle veins that characterises this marble. The two stick figures carved into the marble sculpture are a recurring motif in Penck’s work. The artist named this figurative theme ‘standart’ when these archaic figures began to populate his work in 1961. From these simplified figures, dots and lines Penck began to construct a pictographic alphabet, consisting of personal mythologies, and therefore not necessarily decipherable, rather they are the artist’s visual logic. In 2019, two years after the artist’s death, the Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archeology exhibited a retrospective of the artist’s work A.R. Penck: I Think in Pictures, focusing on the ‘standart’ motif. Standart was a conflation of the English word “standard” and the German “standarte”, meaning “banner”. For the artist, these works operated like flags, emblematic of human universality. Suzanne Duncan Fritsch, L. A.R. Penck: I Think in Pictures. Oxford: Ashmolean Museum, 2019

Tom McNeely (Canadian, B. 1935) "Sequoyah" Original Watercolor painting. Signed lower right. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 19c Sequoyah stamp issued December 27, 1980. Born and raised a Cherokee, Sequoyah never spoke English, yet he watched in awe and wonderment as the white man looked at "talking leaves" and the leaves spoke to him. To be able to glance at a sheet full of another person's thoughts was like "catching a wild animal and taming it," he reasoned. He yearned to document his tribe's speech so that the leaves could speak to his people too. Sequoyah felt certain that this was the key to freedom from the white man. In 1809, Sequoyah tried representing tribal words with small animal figures and symbols, but the list grew hopelessly long. Next, he broke the words into syllables and designated symbols for each one. For twelve years he tirelessly labored toward his dream, often using a charred stick on a piece of bark as his writing tools. In 1821, he was ready to put his syllabary to the test. Men whispered a message to Sequoyah's child and the child wrote the message. Then, without faltering, Sequoyah read the message aloud. The skeptics were forever silenced. Soon, thousands of Indians mastered the eighty-six characters and could read and write. Sadly, despite this written language and Sequoyah's dream of freedom, white men still considered Cherokees as savages, to be relocated at their whim. Fortunately, today the Indian civilization is more highly regarded. In fact, the great Sequoyah is namesake to California's Sequoia National Park. Image Size: 17.5 x 15.25 in. Overall Size: 28.25 x 22 in. Unframed. (B06872)
