A 19th century Italian silver-gilt chamber stick, unmarked, probably by Castellani, Rome circa 1880-1890. modelled as a seated devil with arms out to hold a candlestick, his tail forms the ring handle, the shaped base with flame decoration, the front with a grotesque mask, on three owl and winged devil mask feet, length 11cm, approx. weight 8.7oz. For another example of a devil chamber stick, see Bonhams, New Bond Street, Important Design, 27 November 2019, lot 23. The design for this chamber stick is by Michaelangelo Caetani, who was Castellani's principle patron. A number of candlesticks designed as demons are noted in Castellani's stock registers up to 1899.
A George II silver sugar caster, by Robert Lucas, London 1734, baluster form, the pull-off cover with a large finial, on a circular foot, height 17cm, plus a George III silver chamber stick, by Timothy Renou, London 1796, circular form, reeded border, scroll handle, urn shaped capital, crested, with a later plated snuffer, approx. total weight 16.9oz. (2) The crest is that of Bracken, Byres, Cauty, Dowding, Fitz-Marmaduke, Montgomery and Pitman.
A late 17th century silver taper stick, maker's mark only, E.B with a rosette below, circa 1685, cylindrical stem, ring handle with a scroll motif, on a spread circular base on four bun feet, diameter 8cm, approx. weight 3.1oz. A FRENCH PORCELAIN LAMP ON AN ORMOLU BASE OF A GUARD, LATE 19TH-EARLY 20THa guard porcelain figurine with converted base, the guard stands to the side with his hand up and the other holding a flowering bamboo stick, at the end hangs a lantern with a floral motif and scenes in individual panels, he stands on a gilt natural base, he wears a floral and foliate layered tunic with blue shoes; overall height: 36 cm (14 1/8 in.) CONDITION In age-appropriate condition. Overall surface dust, most notably on around his hands, top of his head and neck, he is missing a thumb that appears to have broken off. Visible adhesive to the lantern on the back right panel. Should be noted that the lamp is wired but not in working condition. Inspection under UV shows scattered retouching to the tunic. N.B.
