A LARGE CHINESE PALE CELADON JADE 'CRANES AND LOTUS' GROUPLATE QING DYNASTY/REPUBLIC PERIODCarved in openwork with trailing lotus flowers and seedpods with two cranes and a small bird amongst the vegetation, the stone a pale uniform cover with the occasional small russet inclusion, 21cm.Provenance: from the collection of David Taylor (1876-1958) and thence by descent. David Taylor was a successful businessman of Scottish descent who was born in Northern Ireland. He resided in Belfast and owned various commercial buildings, shops and a farm. He also had a substantial portfolio of stocks and shares. These jade items were acquired by Taylor during his travels to East Asia in the early 20th century.

TWO CHINESE CELADON JADE PENDANTSQING DYNASTY OR LATER One an open disk carved in high relief with a chilong; the other a naturalistic pebble shape with a low-relief carving of a bird beneath rockwork, and a poem with a two-character Qianlong mark to the reverse, the stone with abundant russet inclusions, both suspended from fabric cords with glass beads, 5.2cm and 4.5cm. NO RESERVEA CHINESE SPINACH-GREEN JADE RUYI SCEPTRE QING DYNASTY The head carved as a large flat lingzhi decorated with a trailing lotus in low relief, the shaft carved with further flowering lotus stems, the stone mottled with light inclusions throughout; together with a zhadou, its bulbous body and flared rim raised on a short straight foot, with an even dark colour to the stone, 34.2cm and 8.8cm. The Victoria & Albert Museum, London, accession no.A.17-1925, for a similar spinach-green jade ruyi sceptre naturalistically carved as a lingzhi. This example was given as a diplomatic gift on 14 September 1793 by the Qianlong Emperor to Sir George Leonard Staunton, Secretary and Minister Plenipotentiary of the first British Embassy to China lead by Lord George Macartney. Though to an early English audience the significance of ruyi sceptres was unclear and generally misunderstood as a symbol of sovereignity, they have always featured in Chinese culture as tokens of good fortune. The word ruyi signifies 'as you wish', pointing to the auspicious significance to these objects. As such, they were seen as appropriate Imperial gifts for diplomatic exchanges such as the British Embassy of 1793.

FOUR CHINESE SNUFF BOTTLESQING DYNASTYOne painted with a dignitary on horseback and his attendant, outlined against a black ground; another of meiping shape with a metallic glaze; a third of globular form with a green crackle glaze; and one jade, carved in low relief with a stag and a bird in a rocky landscape beneath pine trees; together with a soapstone seal of square section surmounted by a chilong with a lingzhi spray in its jaws; and two jade pebble pendants, the stones of celadon colour with dark russet inclusions, 8.2cm max. (7)Provenance: from the collection of Colonel William Edmund Pye (1872-1949). Commissioned into the British Army in 1892, he served with the Indian Army in Tirah between 1897-98, then in 1900 was sent to China as the leader of the British Section of the International Police. It was at this time he started his collection, which has passed by decent to the current owner. Other items from his collection were sold at Christie’s South Kensington, 13th May 2011.
