A CELADON WITH BROWN RUSSET JADE DRAGON PENDANT 漢代 青玉咬尾龍珮 China, Han dynasty (202 BC–220 AD) Made of smooth celadon nephrite jade, roughly oval in shape. Shallow relief carvings depict a coiled Chilong dragon, its body spiraling with its mouth biting its own tail. Both sides are adorned, with the single-horned head facing upward. The dragon's body is intricately engraved with curling cloud motifs, its sinuous form characterized by undulating lines that convey dynamic movement. Muscles are finely delineated, and its toes grip with strength, showcasing exquisite artistry. H: 5.8cm PROVENANCE Acquired in Taiwan in the 1990s. 90年代購於臺灣 NOTE The motif of a dragon or serpent biting its own tail, symbolizing the cyclical nature of the universe, reflects ancient religious beliefs and was a common theme before the Han Dynasty. During the Warring States period, dragon motifs became popular in jade carvings, particularly in the form of looped pendants, representing the pinnacle of artistic expression in dragon-themed jade artefacts. By the Han Dynasty, depictions of dragons on jade rings became more vivid and ornate, with a preference for elaborate decorative styles. Notably, the characteristic feature of Han Dynasty jade dragons is their depiction with mouths open, biting their tails.

A BLACK AND WHITE JADE ‘BEAR AND EAGLE HERO’ PENDANT 清代 黑白玉英雄玉墜 China, Qing dynasty A squatting bear with an eagle draped on its back, the details of the eagle's feathers rendered in subtle relief with incised accents on the softly polished black and white jade surface. The jade pendant has a hole running through its entire body. H: 5.6cm NOTE Because the words for eagle and bear together sound like the word for hero in Chinese, these two animals are often combined to symbolize heroism.

A RARE AND LARGE CALCIFIED JADE ZHULONG ('PIG DRAGON') 紅山文化 玉豬龍 Neolithic period, Hongshan culture (4700-2500 BC) of generous proportions, the iconic coiled body is further accentuated with a superbly rendered wrinkled snout, the signature slit below the sealed lips terminates before meeting the central perforation, the neck is drilled with two holes for suspension, the stone is a white-grey tone with natural flaws. Size: 13.1 x 10.3 x 3.8cm NOTE Renowned for its considerable size, this sculpture portrays a zhulong, also known as a pig-dragon. This term is a contemporary description of the creature's upturned snout, prominent bulging eyes, and coiled body. Zhulong are regarded as the prototypes for later depictions of mythological dragons in Chinese art. These intriguing creations originate from the enigmatic Hongshan culture, which thrived around 3500 BC and provides evidence of a complex belief system in supernatural forces. Jade zhulong sculptures have been unearthed at various tomb sites in Northern China, often found placed on the chests of the tomb occupants, indicating that they were likely worn as chest ornaments.
