A CHINESE CELADON JADE TWO-HANDLED CUP MING DYNASTY The U-shaped bowl carved with two sinuous chilong climbing to the rim, each with a lingzhi fungus in its mouth, the stone with russet-brown striations, 9.5cm. Cf. Compendium of Collections in the Palace Museum, Jade 7, p.160, no.139 for a related cup.
A LARGE CHINESE GREY-GREEN JADE ARCHAISTIC FANG GUI MING DYNASTY The deep rectangular-section body carved with protruding studs around a wide central band, the two C-shaped dragon masks handles with large ears and hooked pendants. The flared rim carved in shallow relief with a narrow frieze with stylised mythical beasts facing the central masks, the tall foot with a band of galloping horses and stylised rocks, together with a hardwood stand inlaid with silver wire with lion dogs and a six character Chenghua mark, 23.5cm. (2) Provenance: formerly in the Rutherston collection, Exhibited at the Exhibition of Chinese Art in New Zealand 1938 and the Victoria and Albert Museum 1927-1934, and then sold by Bluett & Son at the opening day of their exhibition on the 1st March 1948, catalogue no.134, to Sydney L Moss for £85. The fang gui was subsequently acquired by J P Love, in whose collection it remained until 1965 when it was then again sold by Sydney L Moss Ltd, on the 31st December 1965 for £350. Cf. A CHINESE PORTRAIT ON SILK OF THE TANG TAIZONG EMPEROR PROBABLY QING DYNASTY After the original painting in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, pictured standing, wearing a yellow silk robe with five-clawed dragon roundels, his hands on a jade buckle belt, a simple black hat and black boots, framed, 88cm x 160cm. The Taizong Emperor of Tang, previously Prince of Qin, was the second emperor of the Tang dynasty ruling from 626 to 649. He is traditionally regarded as a co-founder of the dynasty for his role in encouraging Li Yuan, his father, to rebel against the Sui dynasty. Taizong is typically considered to be one of the greatest emperors in China's history and henceforth his reign became regarded as the exemplary model against which all future emperors were measured.
A CHINESE PALE CELADON JADE OCTAGONAL CUP STAND LATE MING DYNASTY Carved in relief with a pair of confronting dragons facing a shou character flanked by a swallow, a bat and two fylfots, the central roundel surrounded by a border of ruyi heads, all within a border of a key fret, 17cm. Provenance: from the collection of Mr Robert Bigio (1913-2003). Cf. A MASSIVE CHINESE IMPERIAL PALE CELADON JADE 'BIRTHDAY' BOULDER QIANLONG 1736-95 Carved in high relief with two figures carrying presents up a hill towards an open terrace amongst pine trees where two cranes look up towards the sky. To the side are three small caves, one with a pair of deer. The reverse is carved with further caves, all beneath stylised clouds. The stone with white and russet inclusions, and raised on a reticulated zitan stand carved with rocks, pine branches and various blossoms, the wood with copper-coloured speckles, 21cm. (2) Provenance: the collection of Lady Robertson (d.1977), purchased from John Sparks 17th January 1958 for £150 and thence by descent (recorded in the Sparks' archive). Cf. A CHINESE YELLOW AND RUSSET JADE ARCHAISTIC RHYTON, GONG MING/QING DYNASTY The subtly curved tapering body carved in shallow relief with a band of comma-whorls below a band of key fret to the rim, the lower body deeply carved and incised with a bold monster mask, from which issue two short horns which form feet and a tapering elongated horn forming a handle, raised on a wood stand, 13cm. (2) Provenance: purchased at Me Etienne Ader, Commissaire-Priseur, Paris, 27th November 1965 for 1,856F. Cf. A CHINESE PALE CELADON JADE VASE AND COVER QING DYNASTY The flattened pear-shaped body carved in shallow relief to each side with a scholar beneath a tree with an attendant, one holding a duck, with animal mask loose-ring handles divided by a band of stylised rocks to the neck, the finial formed as a sinuous dragon, together with an archaistic two-handled celadon jade cup, carved in relief with studs and stylised dragons' heads, each raised on a hardwood stand, 18.9cm max. (5)
A LARGE CHINESE CELADON JADE EWER AND COVER QIANLONG 1736-95 The baluster-shaped body raised on a double lotus foot, the handle formed as a ribbon-tied bunch of lotus, with flower stems and leaves extending around the body, a small bird perched on a seed pod to one side. The spout formed from a curled leaf, the neck with a band of spiral roundels dividing the handles, another bird forming the cover's finial, all raised on an openwork hardwood stand carved with millet and lotus, 26cm. A CHINESE MOTTLED GREY JADE ARCHAISTIC VASE MING DYNASTY The stone with dramatic black vertical striations, the body carved in relief with taotie masks and mythical beasts divided by flanges, the sides with two small elephant masks, the flared rim with formal lappets, the foot with raised geometric designs, together with a wood stand, 12.5cm. (2) Provenance: Christie's, London, 3rd November 1969, lot 136. The famous Guwantu scroll in the Victoria and Albert Museum documenting the Yongzheng Emperor's treasures illustrates a number of jade vessels including a closely related vase.
A CHINESE SILVER-WIRE INLAID BRONZE INCENSE BURNER QING DYNASTY The compressed ovoid body with two lug handles and raised on a short flared foot, inlaid with silver wire depicting archaistic taotie designs, cloud scrolls and key fret above a band of stylised dragons, the base with a six character Xuande mark dividing a two character shi sou mark, with a carved hardwood ruyi stand and cover, the cover with a pale celadon jade finial carved as a fish, 19.8cm. A CHINESE YELLOW-GREEN JADE PENDANT QING DYNASTY OR LATER The pear-shaped body carved in shallow relief with a scholar and attendant carrying a qin in a landscape near a pine tree and a waterfall, with a poem on the reverse reading Xie qin fang you yuhn lai xun and signed Zi Gang, suspended from a cord with a red bead and seed pearls, 5.5cm.
A CHINESE CELADON JADE CARVING OF A HOUND PROBABLY SONG DYNASTY Lying down with his body curved and his head turned to dexter, his forepaws stretch out before him and his tail curled upon his haunches, the stone with natural brown inclusions, 6.5cm. Cf. Bluett & Son Ltd., Dr Newton's Zoo, p.19, no.22 for a related carving of a hound dated to the Song dynasty and for a discussion of Tang and Song jade carvings of hounds. The exterior decorated with scrolling flowers and foliage and raised on four small feet in the shape of lingzhi fungus, together with a hardwood stand, 21.8cm. A CHINESE ARCHAISTIC BROWN STEATITE CONG IN LIANGZHU CULTURE STYLE Of tapering square-section form, carved in shallow relief to the exterior with sectional designs containing circular motifs, the carving possibly added later, the stone with russet and cream mottling, 33cm. A FINE CHINESE WHITE AND GREY JADE CARVING OF TWO MANDARIN DUCKS EARLY QING DYNASTY One carved from the white, the other the grey side of the stone, huddled together facing each other with their legs tucked underneath, together with a wood stand carved with swirling waves, 7.5cm. (2) Provenance: previously in the Rothschild collection and Knapton Rasti Asian Art Ltd. A private collection, London.
A RARE CHINESE YELLOW-GREEN AND RUSSET JADE BITONG QING DYNASTY Formed as an oval section of a bamboo stem with a thin studded band at the foot rim, the bitong with a paper label for the Mrs Christian R. Holmes Collection, the hardwood stand with a label for the Alfred Wynschenk Collection, 13cm. (2) Provenance: Formerly in the collection of Mrs Christian Holmes and Alfred Wynschenk, sold by Asian Gallery, Oriental Art & Antiquities, Richard S Ravenal, New York, 6th January 1975 for $4,000. Mrs Christian Holmes (1871-1941) was a renowned American collector. After the death of her husband she moved from Cincinnati to New York where she supported various charitable and cultural organisations, and loaned 22 items to the Royal Academy's International Exhibition of Chinese Art (1935-36).
λ A LARGE CHINESE IMPERIAL CARNELIAN-AGATE 'POMEGRANATE' DOUBLE VASE AND STAND QIANLONG 1736-95 Boldly carved with a fruiting branch of pomegranates picked out in reddish orange and with a smaller branch of peaches to the reverse. The double vase formed as sections of pine with lingzhi and bamboo issuing from the base, the green-stained ivory stand is carved with pine branches amongst rocks, 19cm overall. (2) Provenance: Arthur Wellesley Gosset (b.1837), and then a French private collection. Arthur Wellesley Gosset is recorded in The London Gazette upon entry into the British Army, 'Gent., to be Ensign, by purchase, vice Mulock. Dated 24th October 1856'. Cf.
