Age: Qianlong Period White jade 'Cats and Dragonfly' group, 18th c., Qianlong Period - Attributed to Palace workshop Beijing c. 1760-1795. Well worked with one large and two smaller cats, the larger depicted with a dragonfly grasped in its mouth, all recumbent on a naturalistically rendered leaf selectively eaten in a linear track by a worm, the white pebble stone of even tone and with natural russet markings. 3 7/8" L. 9.8 cm. (excluding stand) Size: 3 1/2", 8.90cm.Provenance: From a Montreal collector Lot essay: During the reign of emperor Qianlong white jade was controlled and therefore each stone was carefully studied for it's inclusions and unique qualities. The best carvers could understand the nature of the stone and the designs conceived could be said to be inspired by the nature of the stone itself. For the present lot a quality stone was selected and this whimsical 'Cats and Dragonfly' group emerged. The natural qualities of the stone were carefully selected to form footsteps of a worm across a leaf on the underside and slight inclusions along the other side form the arch on the back of the larger cat and a slight patterning in the stone speaks to the natural patterning that a cat might have. This depiction of three cats presents a wish for many generations and the worm on the underside contrasts with the dragonfly. It suggests a notion of metamorphosis from worm to butterfly. Additionally cats are known as protectors of silk worms as they keep rats away and rats are known to pray on silk worms. The expression Tsan-Mao or Silkworm-Cat is a homophone for San-Mao (Three cats). The dragonfly or qing-ting represents peace because of the word "qing" which also means "peace". Age: Qing Dynasty Description: A particularly fine ornament carved in white jade to depict a duck and millet branch. The duck shown poised with head turned back over its body and grasping a sprig of millet in its mouth. The duck decorated with symbols and archaic designs showing particular care and skill in carving and polishing. The stone is of a very fine and even white tone with russet highlights to both sides indicating the entire form is inspired by the natural form of the original jade pebble with minimal reduction of material during the carving. Age: Qing Dynasty Description: A large standing figure of Buddha, wearing a flowing robe draped over the shoulder, hands outstretched in a prayer, the face with sympathetic features. The stone is of an even light green tone with a milky texture and infrequent dark inclusions. Probably jade material originally sourced from the Khotan region in northwest China. Size: 9", 22.80cm. Provenance: A Montreal collector acquired from "The Chinese Porcelain Company" New York. Condition: A large green jade Buddha believed to be Kotan jade,  the sculpture appears to be in very good condition, no evidence of significant damage, there are natural fissures and inclusions in the stone.  The stand appears to have been painted or lacquered and the paint or lacquer has been stripped, The stand has two broken areas approximately 1cm to 1.5cm in length of damage along the edge where the statue sits at the base. Age: Ming Dynasty or Earlier Description: Carved as a seated dragon-type beast resting on his hind legs, of stiff squared form with head facing forward. The whole elegantly presented with fine wheel cut features throughout, pale yellowish white stone. Size:2 5/8", 6.70cm. Provenance: A French Collector, Acquired in Paris.Condition: A white jade dragon carving.  The stone is of a greyish white tone, there is a brownish residue on certain areas. Age: Ming dynasty Description: Openwork carved with a central stiff flower head amidst tiers of scrolling foliage and a small rondel of Chinese character script. Size: 2 1/2", 6.35cm. Provenance: From a South florida collectionCondition: A white stone with some russet highlights visible to the reverse exterior edge on one side. A fissure is observed along the outer edge of the top of the plaque. Lateral saw marks are visible in between the reticulated areas there by confirming the hand cutting technique utilized for carving.  A small flea bite approx. 2mm long on the reverse will stop your nail but is not particularly visible and similarly two other small flea bites less than 1mm to the edge of the front face enough to stop your fingernail. Age: late Qing dynasty Description: A very fine Chinese sea-foam green jadeite "Grasshopper and Vine" vase, intricately worked as a flattened ovoid vase set on a rockwork base from which a vine and its tendrils meander up the side of the body with mature leaves, a vegetable and a large grasshopper near the neck, the complementing cover also with openwork vegetation and connected with a very long linked chain, the details cleverly worked to emphasize the natural splashes of apple green in the stone, the polish with an attractive glossy surface and the stone overall with nice texture and translucency. Size: 7.75", 19.7 cm. excluding wood stand. Provenance: Private French collection, acquired in Paris. Condition: The vase is in fair condition, having a single restored link pictured and not very noticeable, a small natural fissure is also visible around the neck under the lid (pictured) and also a fissure is hidden in one of the leaves on the body of the vase (pictures). Age: Qing dynasty Description: A fine Chinese green jadeite inlaid export silver box. The Chinese export silver box with 'chrysanthemum and butterfly' raised decoration on a stippled ground and set with a very good selection of apple green jadeite pierced and incised plaques, the whole raised on four elephant jadeite feet, engraved BENSABOTT SHOP CHICAGO on the base as well as 90 and two makers marks. Size: Height 2 3/4 inches 7 1/2 cm Width 3 1/2 inches 9cm Length 6 1/3 inches 16 cmProvenance: From a Montreal estateCondition: a Chinese silver export box with jadeite inlay, notably from the Bensabbot shop in Chicago, stamped with three hallmarks including one, “W.H”, likely belonging to the maker, Wang Hing the box is inlaid with eleven pieces of jadeite, including the jadeite elephant shaped feet. The jade all appears to be in perfect condition, the box does not have any visible damage in terms of dents, scrapes or wear which is unusual for its age, in fact the box appears to be in very good condition. There is a glue residue around the feet, possibly due to restoration efforts. The wooden inserts on the interior are all in perfect condition, although it is possible that some of the wooden inserts have been replaced to render the cigarette box functional for use, the gold wash to the interior maintains a nice colour, the jadeite plaque on the top has been carefully inspected with a flashlight and does not appear to have any damage whatsoever, perhaps some natural inclusions. The thickness of the jadeite plaque on the top is estimated between 4 and six millimeters, generally speaking the box is in very good condition for it's age. Age: early 20th century Description: comprising: a bracelet, ring, pair of earrings, a brooch, a clip and a necklace, each with openwork carved natural apple green jadeite medallions set in filigree worked silver. 17 Individual pieces of jadeite. Size: Longest 7 1/4", 18.40cm.Provenance: From The Pascal CollectionCondition: A suite of Chinese silver export jeweler with jadeite openwork.  All of the jades appear to be intact with no damage and have been examined under light, the necklace still intact with original working clasp, the earrings are still intact and in wearable condition.  The brooch is still in wearable condition, the tie clip is still in wearable condition with a spring that is still taught.  The ring has a double band to be expandable and there is one side missing, therefore it is not in wearable condition. The bracelet with locking clasp still in good condition, clasp still holds firm, very  slight loses to the filigree work are noticeable on one of the panels, otherwise the bracelet is in good condition.  All of the pieces marked b-e-e and made in China, hallmarks impressed into the reverse. Age: Middle Qing Dynasty Description: An exceptionally fine white jade belt hook carved to depict two confronting dragons the smaller with a sprig of lingzhi mushrooms in its mouth. The belt hook is mounted in a gilt silver mount to make a magnifying glass. The mount which is fitted tightly around the stone utilizes no glue or drilling as to respectfully avoid damaging the impressive white stone. The base of the mounting marked to one side, "Bansebott Sterling". Size:9 1/2", 24cm. Jade belt-hook handle is 5", 12.70cm Provenance: Bensabott Chicago c1930 From a Midwestern American family thence by descent. Lot Notes: The present lot is from a highly respected American specialist in Chinese jade name Bensabott who's store in Chicago was well known across the United States as the place to buy fine antique jade. He was surely influenced by Edward Farmer and supported a market where Chinese jades were repackaged into luxury items for the Western Market.Condition: The jade appears to be in perfect condition, the stone is in a very even white tone with only very slight inclusions. An eight-pointed asterisk medallion centered on each side. Very well hollowed. One of the 4 corners of the underside has a small flee bite that you could feel with your nail but cannot see with your eye. The neck appears tall and in its original length. The mouth is even in the way it's drilled with no chips or damage apparent to the neck or mouth. Your nail is not stopped along the edge on the neck. The stopper originally glued to the bottle. Recently separated. There is oxidized glue residue at the top of the bottle around the mouth.
