Important Antique Chinese Openwork Carved White Jade and (later) 14 Karat Yellow Gold Necklace and Pendant Earring Suite. The necklace is comprised of a central plaque with phoenix birds, scrolling vines and character symbols and is surrounded by nine smaller plaques each with distinct carvings. Pendant earrings are articulated three (3) carved jade sections with screw backs. Necklace clasp stamped 14K. Earrings measure 2-1/2" L, 3/4" W; necklace measures 22" L, 4-1/2" drop. Central plaque measures 5-7/8" W, 1-3/4" H. He was instrumental in bringing democracy to the Qing Dysnasty and was a member of the Chinese delegation at both the Treaty of Versailles as well as the Hague Peace Conference.Victor Hoo, coming from such an illustrious family, continued in his father's footsteps as a diplomat for the Republic of China. Having represented China at the League of Nations, Dr. Hoo was later named Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs in 1945, and later became the highest ranking Nationalist Chinese at the United Nations, becoming Undersecretary General. WW1 HMAS Sydney, SMS Emden 1914 Group of Medals, with Rare Jade & Gold Pendent. A rare complete grouping of items awarded to Officer’s Cook Haylock Frederick Watson, who was serving onboard HMAS Sydney during it’s heroic battle against the German raider SMS Emden on the 9th November 1914. Comprising: Medal Group: 1914/15 Star “L.4309 H.F. WATSON O.C. 3 R.N.”, British War Medal, Victory Medal, “314763 PTE 1 H.F. WATSON RAF”. ... Accompanied by H.M.A.S. Sydney - S.M.S. Emden Medal, 9 November 1914, silver Mexican Dollar dated ‘1886’, mounted by W. Kerr, Sydney. ... Second Mexican Dollar (unmounted) 1888. ... Jade pendant with gold band engraved “HMAS SYDNEY 9.11.14” (This with original accompanying letter 1917). ... HMAS Sydney Western Australian Silver presentation medal named). .... Also a selection of original paperwork, including service papers for the Royal Navy & RAF. .... Forwarding letter for the two Mexican Dollars and Western Australia Medal. ... etc. Officer’s Cook Haylock Frederick Watson was born at Greenwich on the 18th October 1893. Qualifying as a Cook he enlisted into the Royal Navy on the 3rd March 1913. After a time at HMS Pembroke, where he qualified as an Officer’s Cook 3rd Class he joined HMAS Sydney on the 27th June 1913 thereby being on attachment to the Royal Australian Navy. At the outbreak of the war the SMS Emden a German surface raider was operating in the Indian Ocean. The raider spent nearly two months operating in the region, and captured nearly two dozen ships. On October 28, 1914, Emden launched a surprise attack on Penang; in the resulting Battle of Penang, she sank the Russian cruiser Zhemchug and the French destroyer Mousquet. She attempted a similar operation Cocos Islands, but ran into the more powerful HMAS Sydney. Inflicting heavy damage, the Emden was deliberately ran aground by he captain and abandoned after suffering a large amount of damage and heavy casualties. After the battle Watson remained with Sydney for some time. He later was attached to the Royal Naval Air Service seeing serving in France with 216 Squadron. On the formation of the Royal Air Force he transferred and was discharged in February 1919. The Mexican Dollars were salvaged from the Emden.
An Oriental coral and jade large bead necklace and a yellow metal Satsuma enamelled floral decorated brooch (2). CONDITION REPORT Beads are approx 1cm in diameter. Length including clasp is approx 42cm. Weight approx 63.7g. No obvious signs of damage or repair, clasp is in working order. All beads appear to not be damaged. Surface scratches to the brooch.
