Cotes, RA’) [sold for 50 guineas and 8 shillings]; where bought by 'Thistlethwayte'. Private Collection, UK. Note: William Hoare was the first fashionable portraitist to settle in Bath, and he was the leading portraitist there until the arrival of Thomas Gainsborough (1727-1788) in 1759. His portraits in both pastel and oil were universally admired - as early as 1740 George Vertue praised his 'manner of colouring and his disposition of heads'. The present work is very much evocative of his output in pastels and the as yet anonymous artist has conceived his sitter carefully and skilfully, presenting her as a prosperous and attractive lady.
