White jade with a slight golden undertone, carved in the form of the Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, also known as ‘???’ or Guanyin. She is shown erect on a narrow lotiform throne, with both legs stretched out and slightly apart, torso straight and head facing forward. The left arm is arranged with the hand raised in ‘vitarka mudra’ and the right arm lowered in ‘varada mudra’. The expression is serene, with closed eyes and lips drawing a subtle smile, framed by long ears and a beautiful lotus crown that gathers his fine hair. The deity is lavishly adorned with jewellery, including bracelets, pendants and large earrings. The slender body has a bare torso and the legs are covered by a dhoti tied at the waist, while a fine scarf drapes over her shoulders and is draped with great dynamism across her body. Yellow jade ?? (Huáng yù) from Hetian in the form of a plate carved on both sides. It changes from inside to outside with caramel-coloured spots on the surface. The front face has two dragons facing each other, and the back face has curling clouds. In the centre is an empty space. At the upper end it is tied with a cord and a bead (posterior). In very good condition. Qing dynasty (1644-1912) or later. This type of ring is placed on the thumb of the right hand, which is the thumb of the right hand, to hook the string when practising archery. All the elements are either in relief, openwork or engraved.The form of the ‘lion’ or mythical beast in ancient Chinese myths and legends is derived from the transliteration of ancient Sanskrit. Images of these figures are depicted on ancient textiles, belt buckles, seals, bells or buttons to ward off evil spirits. In the southern dynasties, stone statues were often found in front of tombs for the same reason. Jade of an intense spinach-green colour, with light brownish flecks. Carved in the form of a thin rectangular plaque, decorated on both sides with delicate engraved details covered with gold pigment, which highlights the image against the dark green background. The front face shows the central image of the Buddha seated on a large lotus wheel with his legs in the ‘bhumisparsha mudra’ position and his left arm in his lap with his palm facing the sky. The deity, framed by a double circular halo, shows a serene expression, with closed eyes, long ears, hair in a high bun and a thin robe covering his body. Around her, a large celestial court is shown, made up of multiple figures, carrying offerings and ritual elements such as dorjes, food or Dharmas shells, and among them are elongated, fierce dragons, together with a cluster of ruyi clouds and lotuses in bloom. On the back is an elongated poem.The jade piece is set in a custom-made wooden frame of a reddish undertone with relief detailing. Qing dynasty (1644-1912) or later. Size: 44.3 x 14.5 x 30 cm

Lot 125

A vitreous paste of beautiful translucent pinkish-reddish colour, known as Liulí, ‘??’ or ‘colored polish’ in English. It shows the image of the six-armed Mahakala with a fierce expression on his three faces, accentuated by bulging eyes, scowls and open mouth. The wrathful demeanour is emphasized by his dynamic posture in ‘alidhasana’ with his feet on two small prone beings and his multiple outstretched arms, carrying in them attributes such as a capala, an elephant skin, a long snake, or a khatvanga staff. He is adorned with fine beaded jewellery, a billowing sash and a long skin covering his thighs, while his hair is tied up in a high bun, and is topped by a beautiful foliated tiara. The figure stands on a lotiform throne framed by a halo of flames and surrounded by a fine celestial scarf draped over her shoulders. This representation of the deity refers to delusion and the many worldly attachments that must be overcome in order to attain enlightenment. The ‘??’ (Liúlí) is a precious material that was introduced from ancient times via the Silk Road. In China it is considered as one of the most precious materials (gold, silver, jade, coloured enamel, ceramics and bronze), and as one of the ‘Seven Treasures of Buddhism’. The main component is lead-barium glass which, because of its risk, was used exclusively for decorative objects. The composition was obtained from the by-products of bronze smelting, which were refined and processed.
