Machen (Arthur) Ornaments in Jade, typescript, 47pp., signed presentation inscription from the author "for F[ytton] A[rmstrong]" (John Gawsworth) to upper wrapper (now detached), "Torture" signed by the author at head and with several editorial corrections, pencil note by Gawsworth "suppressed for England" to head of "The Idealist", with two additional ?proof pages for "The Rose Garden" with correction in the author's hand, all bound together with split pin butterfly clip to upper corner, slight browning, light surface creasing, preserved in custom chemise and slip-case, 4to, [1930s].*** A presentation copy of this short story collection, likely gifted by Machen to Gawsworth as part of the latter's attempt to publish the collection in the UK. The pages are largely carbon copies except for the story "Torture" which appears to be a working draft.Gawsworth has dated the upper wrapper "Amersham 16/xi/35" and written a longer note that provides some context: "Typed versions of the stories contained in "Ornaments in Jade" prepared for an English Edition. No English Edition was printed, however, but all the stories (excepting 'The Idealist', considered obscene) were printed in 'The Cosy Room'." The Cosy Room was a collection of Machen's stories curated by Gawsworth and published in 1936.

Composed of two rectangular plates carved on both sides, with meticulous relief details showing a beautiful traditional landscape, with rugged mountains, small trees, stylised herons and small characters engaged in various activities. Both jade pieces are set in a custom-made wooden frame of reddish and orange colours, elaborately decorated with archaic, openwork and relief patterns. Qing dynasty (1644-1912) or later. A reddish-ochre-colour jade figure depicting the image of a reclining ram. The animal is depicted in great detail, with its body curled around a circular base. The twisted horns stand out on the head, which leans to the right. The open eyes and closed mouth have a serene expression. The slender legs ending in sharp hooves are curled up and arranged under its own body. A delicate, sinuous branch emerges from the base, and slips into the animal's mouth, as if it were feeding. On the base, fine engraved details are arranged in a succession of concentric circles. A magnificent white jade seal carved in one piece, with subtle gold and reddish flecks. On the upper part of the seal is a free-standing figure of a dragon, depicted in a menacing pose, with muscular legs flexed and resting on three sharp claws. The expression is intense, with wide-open eyes and closed jaws beneath which is a long beard. Crowning the head are short, pointed ears and imposing antlers. Elegantly carved jade in a milky hue. The ensemble is made up of three Buddhas, one larger Buddha and two smaller Buddhas accompanying him. All of them are seated, with their legs folded in ‘dhyanasana’ on which they rest their hands in a meditation mudra, holding a small bowl between them. They are dressed in a long robe or ‘dhoti’ at the hips, leaving the chest and arms uncovered, finely adorned with pendants and bracelets. They have a serene expression, with closed eyes and mouth, wide noses and long ears that mark the face. The delicately carved hair is covered with a beautiful lotus-leaf crown. With a box to size. Adorned by a continuous scene, framed by two thin lines, of a beautiful phoenix with outstretched wings and long feathered tail, resting with its paws on the ground, before a large flaming pearl.This type of rings are placed on the pulling finger which is the thumb of the right hand to hook the string when practicing archery. Impeccable white jade carved in a single piece. It has a thick quadrangular base, on which is placed the magnificent image of a beast from Chinese mythology called ‘??’ or ‘dragon turtle’. This auspicious animal is shown in a defensive position, with sturdy legs ending in sharp claws, a body covered by a thick carapace adorned with hexagonal and rhomboid patterns and a subtle border of fretwork, a curled dragon's tail with thick fur, and the head of the same animal, which tilts to the left with a fierce expression, rounded eyes, a wide snout and intimidating teeth. The body is covered with fine reliefs that faithfully emulate the scales characteristic of traditional Chinese dragons. On the underside, it bears the characters ‘????’ (Hongde Hall), executed in bas-relief in seal script.After studying the characteristics of this piece, the quality of the material, the remarkable workmanship, and the meticulousness of the details, it is considered that it could be a seal made around the 1700s by order of the emperor. There are other examples of imperial stamps in private collections and auctions that left the palace at some point. Catalogue note: The Hongde Hall, belongs to the renowned Qianqing Palace (originally known as Yongsu Hall), built during the Ming dynasty. In 1797, during the Jiaqing reign of the Qing dynasty, it suffered a fire that affected several areas, but was quickly rebuilt the following year, with further modifications in the 1890s and 1897. During the Ming dynasty, the hall was used for the convocation of ministers and workers, and later as a working hall for political affairs and study readings from Confucian texts.A large representation of ‘??’ or ‘dragon turtle’ is arranged on the west side of the Qianqing Palace as a symbol of prosperity, courage, longevity, power and success.
Carved white jade, faintly toned with a milky finish, covered with fine reddish and golden flecks. It is circular in shape, with a central hole, following the archaic models of the ‘Bi’ discs. It is decorated on the front face with three elongated dragons with sinuous bodies, curled tails, robust bent legs and a large head crowned by an elongated central horn. Elegant spinach-green jade, with subtle greyish veins. It has a square-shaped foot, with a stepped profile that is widest at the base. The faceted body has a curved profile, which widens at the shoulders, above which is a stylised hourglass-shaped neck, flanked by four handles in relief in the shape of beasts (two elephants and two tigers), carved in great detail and from which hang rings, only two of which are movable. Covering the mouth is a pyramid-shaped lid with a handle at the top for easier handling. At the level of the belly there are multiple reliefs that form traditional Taotie masks, with fierce expressions, whose cheekbones are shaped by the bodies of elongated dragons, a beast that is again represented on the lid by a fine decorative border.
