A Chinese jade two-handled cup, Ming dynasty (1368-1644), the body, with rounded sides and raised on a short cylindrical foot, flanked by two large loop handles in the form of crouching chilong, each with its head and paws clinging to the mouth rim, its long curvy body swinging to one side with hind legs and long tail clambering on to the body of the cup, the stone of greyish-white tone with brown inclusions and streaks, 11cm long, associated wood stand (2)Provenance: The collection of David Widdicombe QC (1924-2019); thence by descent.His Hon. David Widdicombe was called to the Bar by the Inner Temple in 1950. While at Cambridge around this period, he was a mentor to Lee Kwan Yew, the founder of modern Singapore, and is mentioned in detail in Lee’s memoirs. Taking silk in 1965, he later became a Recorder and subsequently a Deputy High Court Judge, was appointed a Governing Bencher of the Inn in 1973, and served as a Trustee from 1975-86.
