A Chinese inside-painted snuff bottle by Li Kechang, signed and dated 1965, well painted on the inside with eighteen Tang scholars riding on horses amongst pine trees and mountainous landscapes, jadeite stopper, 7.4cm high; and a Chinese inside-painted snuff bottle, painted with eight boys playing in a landscape setting, jade stopper, 6.3cm high (2)Provenance: Private English Collection. The snuff bottle by Li Kechang was purchased by the late owner on 6th December 1994 at Sotheby's London, Lot 201Born in 1942, Li Kechang is considered a master of inside-painted snuff bottles and was president of the snuff bottle committee at the Chinese Craft Artistic Institute. The subject depicted is about the Academy of Literature, set up by the first Tang Emperor in commemoration of his son's contribution to the founding of the dynasty. The eighteen scholars in the picture are gathered under the invitation of the emperor to reside at the academy. A fine Chinese pale celadon jade Chimera form water pot and cover, late Ming Dynasty, 17th century, the hollow vessel is well carved as a crouching, winged, mythical beast with ribbed chest, open jaws showing the teeth and tongue, a small single horn and a bifurcated tail, a circular opening centres the back with the long stopper carved with lion finial, the semi-translucent stone has some areas of pale brown and black, approximately 12.5cm long x 8cm high x 5.5cm wide, on later fitted hardwood stand Compare with a very similar Ming jade water pot sold at Christie's NY from the Junkunc Collection, 18 May 2021, Lot 631Provenance: The jade was collected by the current owner's father who worked in the Far East, on his death it was left to the current owner's mother. After her recent death, although the Jade wasn't left in her Will to the Alzheimer's Society, she always maintained that she would like the jade to be gifted to the Society when she died.
