The censer and cover show impressive relief carving, the thick walls with a dragon motif on one side and a four-character inscription on the other reading 'Er Long Xi Zhu' (Two dragons playing with the pearl), flanked by reticulated dragon handles. The accentuated foot featuring three linghzi masks with suspended ring handles and showing a stylized Ruyi bordure. The domed cover features a repetition of the dragon and linghzi symbol motif and six additional suspended rings, crowned by a large, winding dragon. Bao Dai was the 13th and final Emperor of the Nguyen dynasty, the last Imperial dynasty of Vietnam. From 1926 to 1945, he was Emperor of Annam. After his abdication in 1945, he remained an important advisor to the new government under Ho Chi Minh but left for France in 1946, until he was persuaded by the French to return as head of state in 1949. He moved back to France in 1954 after the peace deal between the French and the Viet Minh, appointing Ngo Dinh Diem as his prime minister. A HUGE AND RETICULATED SILVERED COPPER SCEPTERTibetan-Chinese, late Qing dynasty (1644-1912), the jades possibly earlier. The exceptionally large scepter elaborately open-worked with a design of flowers and scrolling leafy vines, the reverse neatly incised with scrolling clouds. The white and russet jade figure of Zhou Yanzi, grasping the handle of a milk pail in his left hand with the deerskin cloaking his back. Zhou Yanzi's story originates from a Chinese folk tale and describes a boy whose parents began to lose their sense of sight and claimed that the milk of a doe would restore their vision. To reverse their impending blindness, Yanzi bravely cloaked himself in a deerskin and roamed amidst the herd in disguise to collect the potent milk.Condition: Notches overall the figure due to the natural inclusions in the material. A LARGE PORCELAIN FAMILLE ROSE 'BAJIXIANG' TRIPOD INCENSE BURNERChina, late Qing Dynasty (1644-1912). Apocryphal Jiaqing seal mark in a horizontal line in iron red. The globular body with pierced upright curved handles on each side and three stoutly rounded cabriole legs. The censer is sturdily potted and enameled on the body with the Eight Buddhist Emblems, Bajixiang, amidst lotus flowers and tendrils extending onto the legs, all reserved against a lime-green ground. Pink bats are flanking the handles, the waisted neck is encircled by floral scroll below a key-fret band on the galleried rim. With matching base and cover both beautifully carved from dark wood, the lid is flanked with a whitish jade handle with dark streaks.This incense burner is likely to have been part of a five-piece altar garniture set, known as the 'Five Offerings' (wugong 五供), which were widely used in Buddhist rituals to seek protection from the deities. In shape and decoration, the vessels included in these sets, which also comprised a pair of candlesticks and wine containers, recall those employed to perform ancestral sacrifices during the Shang and Zhou periods. Restoring the ancient Chinese ways through the reinterpretation of archaic forms was viewed by the Qing rulers as one way to reinstate the importance of performing filial acts, the core value of Confucian thought that legitimized the emperors' right to rule.Condition: Very good condition with some minor, age-related wear, some minor flakes and glaze chips. Jade Fon (1911-1983) American. Medium: Watercolor. Signed lower right. Watercolor of Golden Gate Bridge with sailboats on the bay. Founder of a well-known watercolor workshop in Asilomar, California, Jade Fon combined Oriental influences and regionalism called "California Style". In the 1930s, he attended the Art Students League in Los Angeles and exhibited with the California Water Color Society*. He was a movie studio scenic artist and worked on Gone With the Wind.
