A JADE HUANG WITH PHOENIXESJade. China, Eastern Zhou, late Warring States period, 3rd century BCDuring the Eastern Zhou, arc-shaped pendants known as huang formed the most common category of jade ornaments made for the nobles: at the end of the period, they were worked in more and more elaborate shapes, like the example presented here, which is embellished with two elegant, addorsed phoenixes carved in openwork at the top center. Their turned back heads are joined at their crests and form the suspension loop of the ornament, while their s-shaped, richly plumed bodies extend along the top border. Both sides of the huang are decorated with small spirals carved in relief with differently oriented 'tails'. The contour of the pendant, marked by a plain band, is cut at regular distances with square indentations. The jade has altered extensively, due to burial, and now is mostly opaque and a dull, chalky white, except in some very small areas. There are numerous brown and black encrustations, indicating the presence of oxidized iron.The present lot matches a famous huang discovered in 1977 in a Western Han tomb at Yanggong, Changfeng county, Anhui province, which is reproduced in many Chinese publications on jades: see, for example, Gu Fang, Zhongguo gu yuqi tu dian (The Pictorial Handbook of Ancient Chinese Jades), Beijing 2007, p.185 or Yang Boda (ed.), Zhongguo yuqi quanji: 3, Chunqiu Zhanguo (Chinese Jades: 3, Spring and Autumn and Warring States), Hebei 1993, no. 125. The pair of phoenixes carved at the top is identical in both huang, but in the excavated one, the surface is further embellished with long curls incised amidst the raised scrolls that seem to extend from the tails of the birds. A WELL-DETAILED CARVING OF A DRAGON AND A PHOENIX IN PALE GREEN JADEJade. China, late Eastern Zhou, early Western Han period, 3rd - 2nd century BCThe rounded, dynamic shape of this well-carved and finely detailed ornament is based on the design of a dragon whose coiled body terminates in the head of a long-crested phoenix. Jades displaying such a configuration of dragons and phoenixes merging together started to be crafted in the Eastern Zhou period and remained in use under the Han dynasty. The bodies of the dragon and the phoenix join at the centre, where they seem to fuse in a single, continuous, graceful line. The curl in the middle, separated from the coiled body of the dragon by a cut-out, stands for both the tip of the dragon's tail as well as the wings of the bird. The bodies of the two mythical animals are differentiated: the dragon's is filled with tight, parallel lines that stress its curvature, while that of the phoenix is polished and simply decorated with pairs of incised lines.The heads are also finely detailed and vividly express the essence of the two animals: the dragon, with feline-like features, is vigorous and powerful, and the phoenix, gentle and graceful. The lovely celadon coloured jade is translucent, with very few black speckles that are mostly located on the inside of the cut-out areas and where there are small nicks. Examples of Eastern Zhou pendants carved as dragons and phoenixes sharing the same body are in the Harvard Art Museums, accession numbers 1943.50.433/435/447/451/468. They are published in M. Loehr and L.G. Fitzgerald Huber, Ancient Chinese jades from the Grenville L. Winthrop collection in the Fogg Art Museum, Cambridge 1975, nos.424-428. Compare also the pendant illustrated in F. A LARGE PORCELAIN FAMILLE ROSE 'BAJIXIANG' TRIPOD INCENSE BURNERChina, late Qing Dynasty (1644-1912) to Republic Period (1912-1949). Apocryphal Jiaqing seal mark in a horizontal line in iron red. The globular body with pierced upright curved handles on each side and three stoutly rounded cabriole legs. The censer is sturdily potted and enameled on the body with the Eight Buddhist Emblems, Bajixiang, amidst lotus flowers and tendrils extending onto the legs, all reserved against a lime-green ground. Pink bats are flanking the handles, the waisted neck is encircled by floral scroll below a key-fret band on the galleried rim. With matching base and cover both beautifully carved from dark wood, the lid is flanked with a whitish jade handle with dark streaks.This incense burner is likely to have been part of a five-piece altar garniture set, known as the 'Five Offerings' (wugong 五供), which were widely used in Buddhist rituals to seek protection from the deities. In shape and decoration, the vessels included in these sets, which also comprised a pair of candlesticks and wine containers, recall those employed to perform ancestral sacrifices during the Shang and Zhou periods. Restoring the ancient Chinese ways through the reinterpretation of archaic forms was viewed by the Qing rulers as one way to reinstate the importance of performing filial acts, the core value of Confucian thought that legitimized the emperors' right to rule.Condition: Very good condition with some minor, age-related wear, some minor flakes and glaze chips. A CELADON JADE 'PIG-DRAGON' PENDANT, ZHULONG, HONGSHANJade. China, Late Neolithic period, Hongshan culture, c. 3500-2500 BCThe translucent jade, which is polished and smooth, is of a pale celadon tone with few mottled creamy-white inclusions.Depicted is a coiled "pig-dragon". The cut stands for the mouth of the animal, whereas the lines carved just above the incision suggest the snout. The round, bulging eyes are highlighted and encircled by a large groove, while the ears of the mythical creature emerge slightly from the jade. An additional conical perforation on the back, just below the head, serves as the suspension hole.One of the most typical categories of Hongshan ornaments is definitively represented by pendants carved in the shape of coiled 'dragons' or mythical creatures. AN ARCHASITIC JADE SCABBARD SLIDE WITH DRAGON AMID CLOUDS, EARLY MINGJade. China, early Ming dynasty, 14th-15th centuryThe exquisite scabbard slide is quite sculptural, with a general rounded shape and a carved design of a dragon in high relief as seen from above, emerging from amidst the clouds. The head of the dragon is decorated with bumps that describe the snout and eyes, and carved lines for the eyebrows and shape of the head. Parallel carved lines run along its back, accentuating the curve of the body, and other carved curls represent the limbs, tail, and curves of the clouds.The jade is covered with mottled areas of light and dark brown, and black spots, especially in the central part on top, which have rendered the originally translucent light green jade opaque in those areas. A SMALL WHITE JADE CONG, QIJIAJade. China, Qijia Culture, c. 2200-1600 BCThe geometric simplicity of this miniature cong renders it extremely contemporary in form. Unlike the Liangzhu culture cong which were decorated with masks motifs, this small plain Qijia cong totally lacks surface decoration. Carved to almost pure perfection with only some slight variation in surface width on the collars, the jade exhibits all the essential features of Qijia jades: purity of form and exploitation of the natural inherent qualities of the stone.The cong, in a white variety of jade found in deposits in Qinghai province, presents some white speckles and striations as well as a couple of areas where the jade is dark brown, mostly located on one of the collars. The stone is polished and fairly smooth, but not shiny, and the core is rougher with the usual central ridge. There are also some deposits of calcification in the nicks on the top edge of one of the collars.Compare a related Qijia culture cong of a similar jade at Christie's New York in Dongxi Studio- Important Chinese Jade and Hardstone Carvings from a Distinguished Private Collection on 17 March 2016, lot 909, sold for USD 27,500, and another at Christie's Hong Kong in Chinese Archaic Jades from The Yangdetang Collection on 29 November 2017, lot 2713, sold for HKD 937,500. AN ARCHAISTIC DING-FORM BRONZE TRIPOD CENSERChina, the bronze vessel dating to the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644); the wooden lid and jade knob dating to the 19th century.. The bronze censer in the form of an archaic ding vessel, the rounded bowl-shaped body supported on three curved legs, the flat, lipped rim is applied with two U-shaped handles. The exterior and legs with a band of archaistic motifs against a leiwen ground. With a matching hardwood cover carved in openwork and set with a jade finial incised with the Ying Yang symbol.The design of the present censer is copied from Chinese Shang and Zhou-dynasty ding censers, which were admired by many scholars of the period and were used for cooking and ritual offerings originally. A HAN JADE RING ORNAMENT WITH COILED CHILONGJade. China, Han dynasty, 1st century BC - 1st century ADThe strong impact of this disc is given by the twisting and turning of the sculptural dragons carved in high relief. The top is decorated with two dragons that encircle and overlap the surface of the disc. Their tails, bodies, and heads form a series of curves that cover the entire surface in such a way that it is difficult to discern where one dragon ends and the other begins: in fact, the neck and appendages of one attach to the other's curled, wavy tail. Their turned back heads curve into the center of the disc and face their bodies that are decorated with a simple carved line that runs along the entire length. Tear-drop incisions, parallel lines and double lines define the limbs, tails, and other details of the bodies, while the two carved parallel lines that define the snout curve outwards to describe the eyes. Engraved lines create a thin border along the circumference of the disc and the internal hole, and the surface of the back is filled in with a pattern of raised carved curls.Visible transition of the alteration of the stone, from the top carved area through towards the bottom, is evident by the changes in color: about half of the bottom and all the carved decorations on the top have turned white, grayish, and opaque. The disc is heavily encrusted with black and turquoise deposits in all the grooves and carved areas which are due to contact with iron and bronze, respectively. The corrosion has given way to multiple nicks around the exterior of the disc and in a few places on the outer area of the carving. The jade retains its smooth, shiny texture and some of its translucency, mostly on the bottom part of the disc.The presence of small metal encrustations suggest that this ring was used as a sword fitting, most likely as a pommel.Compare with a round sword fitting from the Arthur M. Sackler collection at Christie's New York in Fine Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art on 16 September 2010, lot 984 (part lot), sold for USD 10,625, and another, also carved with chilong, at Christie's Hong Kong in Adorning the Kings - A Private Collection of Archaic Jade Ornaments on 31 May 2017, lot 2711 (part lot), sold for HKD 8,460,000.
