Anna Meszaros Hungary - five hand made needlework figurines including goose girl with stick H20cm; shepherdess in a sitting pose playing a penny whistle with a lamb on her knee; young girl holding a flowerpot; and two others (5) Auctioneer's Note: Anna Meszaros came to England from her native Hungary in 1959 to marry an English businessman she met while demonstrating her art at the 1958 Brussels Exhibition. Shortly before she left for England she was awarded the title of Folk Artist Master by the Hungarian Government. Anna was a gifted painter of mainly portraits and sculptress before starting to make her figurines which are completely hand made and unique, each with a character and expression of its own. The hands, feet and face are sculptured by layering the material and pulling the features into place with needle and thread. She died in Hull in 1998.Condition Report:Good condition.

The foreigner-esque face of the sarumawashi is carved expressively with large eyes and a wide grin baring teeth. The ivory bearing a deep-yellowish patina, turning honey-colored in the back, the back with large and asymmetrical himotoshi placed at an angle to each other.HEIGHT 9.7 cmCondition: Very good condition with wear and traces of use consistent with age and handling. Here he is depicted standing happily, wearing a typical hat, two large bamboo shoots slung over his back. The well-toned pale boxwood bearing a fine patina. Signed underneath the left foot MINKO and kakihan.HEIGHT 4.8 cmCondition: Good condition with few tiny nicks here and there, a small crack to the stick.Literature comparison:A closely related or possibly the same wood netsuke, formerly in the collections Henri T.
