A Qajar engraved jade cup Persia, 19th Centuryof flaring form with slightly everted rim on a short foot, engraved with four cartouches containing inscriptions in nasta'liq on a ground of scrolling vines 8 cm. diam.Footnotes:Inscriptions: two couplets from a ghazal of Hilali Jaghata'i (AD 1470-1529).Hilali Jaghata'i was a renowned Persian poet of Turkish origin. In about 1491 he moved to Herat and became a member of the court of Sultan Hosayn-e Bayqara. His literary output is considered to be amongst the most refined of the first half of the 16th Century, and is still well known in Central Asia, particularly in Tajikstan, where it is still recited by folk singers. His most famous work is the Divan. The remainder, including the sketch, are by Cary Welch.Sir Bernard Eckstein (1894-1948)Sir Bernard Eckstein was a connoisseur and collector of wide interests, whose family wealth derived from Sudanese cotton and mining interests in South Africa. He became a director of various companies involved in these areas. He bought widely and was able to donate works of art to various institutions, such as the National Gallery, London, and Persian drawings and miniatures to the British Museum, the acquisition of which were said to have 'undoubtedly immensely increased [the national collection's] importance and interest'.
