A PALE GREEN AND RUSSET JADE 'BIRD AND BEAR' GROUP17th centuryThe pale green stone with patches of attractive bright russet skin, carved as a bird with outstretched wings protectively shielding the recumbent lion, wood stand, box. The present carving is known as a yingxiong group, since the eagle (ying 鷹) and the bear (xiong 熊) together represent a visual pun for a 'hero', (yingxiong 英雄), perhaps suggesting that the piece would have been appropriate as a gift to someone serving in the military.Yingxiong carvings come in many different interpretations, from the gentle bird pecking the nose of an archaistic beast illustrated in the Compendium of Collections in the Palace Museum: Jade 6, Ming Dynasty, Beijing, 2011, no.261 and the more fearsome creatures illustrated in the Compendium of Collections in the Palace Museum: Jade 9, Qing Dynasty, Beijing, 2011, no.149, to the unusual form of the 'hero vase' featuring two conjoined cylindrical vases flanking an archaistic eagle and bear; see the spinach-green jade example illustrated in the Compendium of Collections in the Palace Museum: Jade 10, Qing Dynasty, Beijing, 2011, no.149.The present carving makes most effective use of the almost triangular pebble, highlighted by patches of deep russet. Instead of depicting the ferocity or stylised archaism frequently associated with the motif, this carving instead offers an intimate picture of two creatures looking at each other in harmony, with the bird spreading in its wings protectively over the crouching docile beast.See a related pale green jade yingxiong group, 17th/18th century, which was sold at Bonhams London, 12 May 2011, lot 62.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: YY Subject to CITES regulations when exporting items outside of the EU, see clause 13.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

The phrase 'ride an elephant' (qi xiang 騎象), has a similar pronunciation as ji xiang (吉祥), meaning good fortune. Furthermore, boys cleaning or 'washing the elephant' (sao xiang 掃象), form a rebus for 'sweeping away the phenomena of the outside world', which are thought to be mere illusions. The pun is based on the fact that the pronunciation of 'elephant' and 'image' is the same in Chinese (xiang 象). Such finely carved pieces from Mughal India, Xinjiang and Mongolia are understood to have been introduced to the Imperial Court during the Qianlong reign period as tribute ware. It appears that the first documented piece arrived in 1758, and further pieces were presented to the Imperial Court from 1760 onwards, once Xinjiang was secured under the Qing administrative control. The Qianlong emperor greatly admired the fine quality of the Mughal jade workmanship, and wrote poems praising the Mughal pieces in his collection, describing them as 'thin as paper'. Chinese carvers strove to imitate the Mughal style, and arguably even surpassed the Mughal carvers in technical fineness of their carving. The thinness of the walls and simplicity of the carving in the Mughal style are particularly well suited to reveal the beauty of the jade stone itself. Indeed the apparent thinness is often as much the effect of the delicate translucency of the stone as it is a reflection of the carver's masterful skill. A number of Mughal and Mughal-style jade pieces in the Imperial collections are now in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, of which many were included in the Special Exhibition: Exquisite Beauty - Islamic Jades, Taipei, 2007. See for example the open dish form, and small handles shaped like gently dropping fruit, on nos.48 (incised with a Qianlong mark) and 56; see also the similar treatment of the fruit handles and soft greyish-green stone of no.57. He was born in San Francisco in 1871 to a prominent family of French bankers. It was after the family returned to France in 1884 and during an extended tour of European museums that David David-Weill developed what was to become a life-long passion for the arts. He was in many ways a true visionary who began collecting Chinese art long before its aesthetics became known to a wider audience in the West. With a discerning eye for quality and rarity and with a tremendous curiosity about the objects he acquired, he formed one of the most important collections of early Chinese art in France. During his lifetime he donated many pieces to the Musee Guimet, the Louvre and the Musee des Arts Decoratifs in Paris while also supporting the acquisition of other important works of art for these museums.See a related jade axe-blade, Neolithic period, in the collection of the National Museum of History, Taipei, illustrated by J.Johnston and Chan Lai Pik, 5,000 Years of Chinese Jade, Taipei, 2011, no.9For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

The mission specialised in educational, literary and philanthropic work and Dr Rieder was in fact, not a theologian or missionary, but a teacher of mathematics, physics and science to high school students attached to the SOAM. His guiding principles were 'Creating understanding between different cultures' and 'Building bridges between East and West'. While in Qingdao, Dr Rieder collected a wide variety of Chinese art. The objects in the collection thus offer a unique window into the type of antiques that were on the market in Qingdao in the second quarter of the 20th century. As well as demonstrating his passion for Chinese art, his collection also reveals the personal friendships Dr Rieder forged with local artists, some of whom he knew from his teaching activities. Dr Rieder had a scholarly approach to studying his collection. Alongside many of his objects, meticulous notes can sometimes be found detailing his art historical commentaries. The collection was hence Dr Rieder's gateway to the history and culture of China. A VERY RARE CLOISONNÉ ENAMEL BEAKER VASE, GUEarly 15th century Of slender form with a compressed central section rising from a spreading foot to a flaring trumpet neck, decorated to the central section and foot with large flower-heads issuing from leafy scrolls against a dark-blue ground, separated by four flanges, the neck with tall arching lappets containing further flower-heads against a dark-blue ground, beneath the rim with grapes and tendrils on a turquoise-blue ground. 25cm (10in) high.Footnotes:十五世紀早期 銅胎掐絲琺瑯花卉紋出戟觚The present lot is extremely rare with another example in the Palace Museum in Beijing. Compare with a nearly identical cloisonné enamel beaker vase, early Ming dynasty, in the Qing Court Collection, illustrated in the Compendium of Collections in the Palace Museum: Enamels, 1, p.86, no.20.Of archaistic form inspired by ancient bronze vessels from the Shang and Zhou dynasties, the present lot encapsulates the Imperial Court's concerns for the moral and political aspects of the antique. Gu vases were mentioned even in the Analects (Lunyu: Book 6, verse 25) purportedly the sayings of the sage Confucius written down by his disciples. We know that originally these were wine vessels to be drunk from by humans rather than spirits, specifically in religious sites. Although by the Ming dynasty rituals had changed, the gu vase still continued to hold important value, and successive reigns continued to imitate the shape in different media including jade and cloisonné enamel. By reviving the form of these archaic vessels, the Court strengthened its legitimacy as custodians of Confucian tradition and ritual, signalling their own virtue and mandate to rule.See a similar cloisonné enamel vase, gu, early Ming dynasty, illustrated in Colourful, Elegant, and Exquisite: A Special Exhibition of Imperial Enamel Ware from Mr. Robert Chang's Collection, Suzhou, 2007, no.10. Full title: A rare Chinese monochrome white-glazed bowl, Jinlu Dajiao Tan Yong mark, JiajingDescription:Dia.: 9 cm - H.: 4,5 cmÊ Condition: (UV-checked)- In quasi excellent condition, with a few superficial glaze loss on the rim.Ê _____________- _____________Ê Provenance: - A Belgian private collection.- A South-German private collection.Ê Ref.: - The British Museum, registration no. PDF,B.675 for an almost identical cup. (link available on our website rm-auctions.com) - A similar bowl, dated Xuande, is in the National Palace Museum of Taiwan. (link available on our website rm-auctions.com)Ê Presented in a blue-lined glass-front display box, which dates back to the period of the Republic of China (1912-1949).In the well of the bowl, we find the character cha (tea) within a double circle in underglaze blue. On the base is the mark 'Jinlu Dajiao Tan yong' (for use on the Gold Record Great Sacrifice Altar) within a circle, the cobalt of a deep blue tone. Both the Taoshuo and the Jingdezhen Taolu mention a tanzhan (altar cup). The Taoshuo first quotes a passage from the Bowu Yaolan (Select Items from Things Surveyed): Small white cups, inscribed with the characters 'tea', 'wine', "hot water with dates' and "hot water with ginger' respectively. They were Daoist ceremonial vessels for Shizong [Jiajing Emperor] and were called altar cups. They are not as good as those from the Xuande period. These cups from the Jiajing period exist in three sizes: large, medium, and small. Those with the "tea" character are of good quality, while those inscribed "hot water with ginger' are of inferior quality. They are inscribed "Jinlu Dajiao Tan Yong". In Daoist terminology Jinlu is an edict from the High Lord. The Jinlu dajiao (gold register), the huanglu dajiao (yellow register), and the yulu dajiao (jade register) are three important sacrificial ceremonies. The present cup (and excavated shards) provides important information as to what was placed on the altar on such occasions.Ê __________________"______"_______"_"_"_"_________________________________________"________"_'"_'"_'"_'___"______'______"_________"__"__"__"(__)______Ê ____"______"___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Ê ____________"_____"_____________________________"______________________________________________________________________" "__"____"_____"__________________The absence of a condition report does not imply that a lot is in perfect condition.
