Jade is hard but brittle, so the blades made from this beautiful material are unlikely to have been put to practical use. Instead, they would have been held by chieftains as symbols of authority. Large quantities of jade blades have been excavated in different regions in China, indicating their widespread use over a span of more than 3,000 years.Expert note: The British Museum described a related form of axe as Songze type (see Literature comparison), which is a culture discovered at Dongshancun site in Zhangjiagang city, Jiangsu, where numerous tombs from ancient cultures were unearthed, including their manifold contents.Literature comparison: Compare a related stone axe, also dated to the Neolithic period, in the British Museum, accession number 1945,1017.115, and another in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, with the accession number A.64-1936.

Of notable interest in that auction was lot #202, a jade bowl dated to the Qianlong period. 1. This box and cover may demonstrate the remarkable skill and craftsmanship practiced in the jade workshops reaching its peak during the Qianlong reign. The two perfectly fitting halves of the melon and interlocking loose loop-handle joining them together are all carved from a single block of jade, which would have required consummate skill and precision. 2. The melon and butterfly form the rebus ‘guadie mianmian’ (瓜瓞綿綿), which is a wish for numerous descendants. This was a popular motif during the Qing dynasty, and there are several white jade bottles with this motif illustrated in Chang Lin-sheng, Snuff Bottles in the Collection of the National Palace Museum, Taipei, 1991, nos. 142, 143, 145, 146 and 153. 3. See another related Qianlong period ‘peach-form’ box and cover sold at Christie’s New York, USA, 2011-09-15, lot 1020, for USD 120,100. 珍稀白玉“瓜瓞綿綿” 中国,清代,似乾隆时期 NOTE: CONDITION REPORTS AND MEASUREMENTS It is up to the bidder to satisfy themselves prior to buying as to the condition of a lot. A FAMILLE VERTE 'MONTH' CUP WITH KANGXI MARK BUT LATER The cup is delicately potted with flaring sides, with the exterior painted and enamelled representing the sixth month with a mandarin duck swimming in a lotus pond with a kingfisher in flight overhead. The reverse has an inscription, roughly 'Jade-like, the lotus root is untainted by muddy waters; the gathering dew drops are like pearls on its heart-shaped leaves', followed by a seal mark reading ‘Shang’ (lit. ‘Appreciation’). The base is inscribed with an apocryphal Kangxi mark. H: 4,8 cm
A WHITE JADE CARVING OF TWO MONKEYS WITH A PEACH CHINA, POSSIBLY QING DYNASTY OR LATER Carved out of a single piece of stone of flawless white tone. It depicts two seated and coiled monkeys with a peach. Its base is finely carved to depict the monkeys’ tails and feet. With a desirable and sweet polish. H: 4,2 cm Weight: 96,2 grams Notes: 1. The motif of monkey and peach has been popular in Chinese art since the tale of ‘Xiyou ji’ (西遊記 - Journey to the West), published in the Ming dynasty, narrating the story of a monkey (the Monkey King Sun Wukong - 孙悟空) stealing a celestial peach of longevity from the orchard of the Queen Mother of the West. Naturally, the symbolism is one of longevity as the peach (tao - 桃) symbolizes marriage, spring, justice and especially Daoist immortality. 2. A similar carving of a single monkey holding a peach was sold at SOTHEBY'S London, UK, 2013-11-06, lot 28, for GBP 110,500. Fan's works were commonly incised by scholars with poems or other scholar's taste subjects such as the 'three friends of winter'. 2. PROPERTIES FROM A NOTED COLLECTION OF JADES AND SNUFFBOTTLES A WHITE JADE CARVING OF A LOTUS ROOT AND BIRD CHINA, QING DYNASTY The stone, of fine white color highlighted with added russet, is naturalistically carved as a lotus root or rhizome to each side and further depicted with a bird. L: 7,5 cm Weight: 117,8 grams Notes: 1. A seemingly rare and original depiction of the subject. Because the Buddha is often depicted as seated atop a lotus, the lotus is considered a sacred Buddhist symbol (one of Eight Auspicious Symbols) representing purity and detachment from worldly cares. Additionally, the Chinese word for lotus is ‘lianhua’ (莲花) or ‘hehua’ (荷花) and ‘lian’ is also the pronunciation of the words for continuous (连) and harmony (和). As a result, the lotus has the hidden meaning of ‘continuous harmony’. 2. A fine white jade stone blushed throughout with russet highlights. 3.
