Chinese hardwood box inset with oval carved jade or celadon hardstone plaque, carved in low relief with mythical beasts and foliage, the box 9cm wide, the plaque 7cm wide. Provenance: By descent from Douglas Shepherd (1922-1989), a designer and architect working on public houses for the brewery firm Ind Coope. He was heavily influenced by and was a serious collector of Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau, including leading designers and artists such as Charles Ashlee and Jessie M King. He assembled a large collection from the 1950s to 1970s. His book collection was subsequently sold through Sotherby’s and in 2013 his magnificent silver collection by Archibald Knox and others was sold through these rooms.Probably 20th century, although the plaque could be older. The box has splits.

A Chinese hongmu or huanghuali jade mounted cover, 18th/19th century the inset pale celadon jade star shaped plaque carved and pierced with two boys holding a vase, 4.9cm across, the sides of the cover carved in relief with bats biting a peach branch, 6cm high, 7.3cm diameter**CONDITION REPORT**The Jade Clarke appears to be in good condition, but has been fixed in place to the cover so we are unable to examine the back of the carving. Amongst the smoke on the front is a precious object wrapped as a present and on the reverse a feather amongst the flames. Various colours of Jade from very pale or white to spinach, grey and brown.
